Activity Plan for Preschool- Age 2-3yrs

Name: Purdelle Hilaire
Title: Winter Age Group 2’s
Content What content area(s) does this lesson cover?
area(s)/developmental This lesson covers the Math area where children will use one-to-one correspondence to practice
domain(s) addressed counting.
How does this lesson support all five domains of child development?
Approaches to learning: Children will be able to participate in a play activity where they graph
their preference of gloves vs mittens on a chart. They will learn to count the number in each column
and identify which column has more, less or the same amount.
Social-Emotional: Children will be able to express if they prefer glove or mittens
Cognitive: Children will be able to do one-to one counting, as they count each picture in each
column on the chart.
Language: Children will learn to identify which column has more, which column has less or if both
columns have the same amount.
Physical: Children will be able to strengthen their fine motor skills and hand eye coordination as
they carefully place their picture in their chosen column.

Brief description and Why is there a need for this lesson (include citation)?
rationale for the lesson Graphing is intended to introduce early counting using one-to-one correspondence. It gives the
children an opportunity to be exposed to math concepts and create a foundation for them to build
upon. Albert Einstein noted, “Not everything that counts can be counted. Not everything that can be
counted counts.” In addition to counting, students will learn to identify the concepts or more, less
than and equal to.
This lesson is: * A new concept/activity * A continuation of a previous lesson/activity
* A review of a previous * A conclusion of a concept
lesson/activity
Keep in mind appropriate length of an activity for preschool-aged children is 15-20 minutes, no
Timeframe more than 45 mins for children K-2 grade)
This lesson will be no more than 15mins and will be conducted during our meeting time.

Objective(s) of the activity What will children know, or demonstrate as a result of this learning experience?
Lesson objectives must align with the assessment of student learning.

Students will be able to compare using the terms more, less than or the same.

Connections to standards Which NYS Early Learning Guidelines or Next Generation ELA Standards are addressed? Are there
other standards used?

The standards
addressed according to the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework is (IT-ATL 4) child
develops the ability to show persistence in actions and behaviors.
Social/Emotional- (P-SE 9) Child recognizes self as a unique individual having own abilities,
characteristics, emotions and interest.
Language-(IT-LC1) child attends to, understands and responds to communication and language
from others.
Physical-(IT-PMP 6) child coordinates hand and eye movement to perform actions.
Cognitive-(IT-C3) child recognizes between familiar and unfamiliar people, objects or events
Approach to Learning-(IT-ATL3) child maintains focus and sustains attention

Language Objectives What language/vocabulary, communication, or literacy skill(s) do I want my students to develop in
this lesson? For edTPA consider this: Which academic language demands am I targeting? Choose

segment. How is this activity using the specific language demand?

Language objectives must align with the assessment of children’s language learning

Students will be able to identify with their peers and be able to count how many children is in
each column. For example, (in the gloves column, 1,2,3,4,5,6 children prefer gloves), 1,2,3,4,
children prefer mittens. The gloves column has more and the mittens column has less.

Resources/materials needed: -A poster board with 2 columns. One showing gloves and the other showing mittens.

Anticipatory Set (Connection/Motivation) What will you do to get children’s attention, or to

introduce children to this learning activity? Describe the process in getting them interested and
engaged. HOOK
Sing a song “sit on your spot, sit on your spot, lets everybody sit on your spot….” Then I would do
a mindful moment where students take deep breaths in and out.
1. I would ask students how does it feel outside? Does it feel warm or cold?
2. Ask students how we can keep our hands warm.
3. Show pictures of gloves and mittens and ask if they know what they are.

Instruction/Mini Lesson (Outline the procedures or sequence activities that will make up this
learning experience; for instance, you might follow a routine wherein you model (I try); and ask for
active involvement (we try) during a whole group session.
4. Then introduce the chart and tell students that everyone will get to decide what they like
best
5. I will then say I like gloves and put my picture in the gloves column.
6. Then ask who would like a turn
7. Give each student a small cut out picture of their faces with tape on the back as I call them
one at a time to make their choice on the chart.
8. The student will put his or her picture in the column of their choice and then go back on their
spot and the next student is called, until everyone has a turn.
9. When everyone has had a turn, we will count the number of pictures in the gloves and
mittens column respectively.
10. We will then compare the two, and talk about which column has more, which one has less or
is it the same.

Independent Practice (small group activity, working with partners, or independently)

This activity is an independent activity.

Closure (sharing/reflection, next steps)

Students will be able to display their one-to one correspondence as they engage on other math
activities. Therefore for a next step, students will be able to count pegs by colors and then
compare them using the words more. Less or same

Follow up/Extension How can I provide an opportunity to remediate, reinforce, or expand on students’ learning today in
activities class?
Activity Plan for Preschool- Age 2-3yrs

I would reinforce lesson by introducing an attendance chart. Students will move their picture from
the home column to the school column on the attendance chart each day when they come to school.
Then during our meeting, we can count how many children is at home and how many is in school.

Family Engagement Activities

How can I support families in extending the learning in their home environment?
Encourage families to have children sort out their toys into two piles. For example, stuff animals
and cars. Then have children count and compare which has more, less or are they the same.
Or have parents encourage students to count their snacks, example pretzels, as they eat.
