Title : Medusa: The Symbol Of Sexual Harassment
General Purpose: To inform
Central idea : On social media platform called Tiktok, I’ve found a trend that told us about
sexual harassment that relates to Medusa’s history. In my speech, I will carry
out the history of Medusa and why it’s related to the Tiktok trend nowadays.

INTRODUCTION
i. Have you seen on your for you page (fyp) on the Tiktok Platform that there is a video
made by girls in that content of the video they make a story about themselves and at the
end of the video there is a picture of a woman with snake hair? (Insert a video)
ii. 2 months ago, Medusa tattoos are getting popular on Tiktok even this day. The
#medusatattoo has over 622.0M views on Tiktok (last updated on 26/11/2022)
iii. I have been interested in Greece Mythology since I watched a movie named ‘The Clash
of The Titans’. One of the attractive characters in this movie is Medusa, the crazy
snakehead lady who turned people into stone.
iv. Who is Medusa exactly? Why does she behave like that? and the most important thing is
why Medusa has become a symbol of the story of sexual harassment that trending on
Tiktok.
(Transition; beginning the life story of Medusa.)

BODY
1. MAIN POINT 1 (THE STORY OF MEDUSA)
a) This is the beginning story of medusa. There are many versions of this story, but this
version is often told by ancient Greece.
i) Medusa is portrayed as incredibly beautiful. Medusa was a priestess to Athena and
one of the parts of the requirements of being a priestess to Athena is to promise to
remain a virgin while in service.
ii) Poseidon sexually assaulted Medusa while she was doing her job as priestess
because she rejected his love and Medusa ran into the temple to get Athena’s
protection.
 iii) Athena is mad at Medusa (not Poseidon) and gives her punishment by turning her
into a monster that has snake hair and makes whomever men look at her they will
be turned into stone.
iv) Soon enough, Perseus managed to kill Medusa because they think Medusa is
dangerous.
2. MAIN POINT 2 (THE MEANING OF THE MEDUSA TATTOO)
a) According to Olivia Burke in her news in the US SUN, tattoos of medusa have become a
symbol of strength for survivors of sexual assault.
i) It has become a symbol for combatting the culture of victim-blaming, as Medusa
was a woman made into a monster for her own rape.
ii) It also has brought awareness to the unfortunate number of women who have
been victimized by sexual assault, many of whom never get any justice but instead
get blamed and accused of lust toward men.
b) Many campaigns are carried out to support and help victims of sexual assault such as the
Me-Too Movement.
i) She is sexually assaulted, blamed, punished, and later murdered. Her assaulter is
not held accountable, and her punishment is unfair. Medusa does not get any
justice.
ii) For example – Shraddha Walkar who has been assaulted and killed by her
boyfriend.
a) Her body was chopped into 35 pieces before her boyfriend threw it in the
forest.
b) The reason is she pressurized her boyfriend just to get married to her and
society is questioning and blaming her because that is the reason why her
boyfriend gets mad and killed her.
iii) The questions and blame should be aimed at society and men who have been
taught that violence against women isn't the real problem.

CONCLUSION
1) Medusa was raped and did not get any justice. Perhaps, she was killed while pregnant
with her rapist's child. Later, her story become an awareness such as
i) her story gave the power of survival to the victims.
ii) silencing powerful women
iii) Rape culture and how society tends to blame the victims of rape instead of the
rapist.
