TECHNICAL BACKGROUND FOR NEW TOYOTA HILUX 3.0G The most popular pick-up family in Malaysia has an additional member in the form of the new Toyota Hilux 3.0G. With the inclusion of this new model, imported as a CBU (Completely Built-Up) vehicle from Toyotas factory in Thailand, the Hilux line-up is broadened to 5 variants as follows: Toyota Hilux Double Cab 3.0G Intercooler Nozzle Turbo Diesel 4x4 with Automatic Transmission Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.5G Turbo Diesel 4x4 with Automatic Transmission Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.5G Turbo Diesel 4x4 with Manual Transmission Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.5 Standard Turbo Diesel 4x4 with Manual Transmission Toyota Hilux Single Cab 2.5 Turbo Diesel 4x4 with Manual Transmission The original concept of Tough, Sophisticated and Modern which characterizes the current Hilux generation and has made it the market leader is enhanced with the Tough and Powerful concept that the new Hilux 3.0G offers. As with the other Hilux variants, this new variant was developed for dual-purpose usage but now provides extra power and performance for customers with more demanding requirements. The new Hilux 3.0G is available only as a Double Cab variant with the following colour choices: Black Mica, Silver Metallic, Super White II. DRIVING PERFORMANCE The new Hilux 3.0G has a powerful version of Toyotas D-4D Common Rail Turbo Diesel 4-cylinder engine. Common Rail technology significantly improves the performance of the diesel engine and enhances driveability and fuel economy as well as lowers harmful emissions in the exhaust gases. The journey is also more pleasant as combustion noise is reduced. With Common Rail Direct Injection, a very high pressure for fuel delivery is maintained at all speeds, along a single shared fuel line (the common rail) to all the cylinders. Conventional diesel systems must build up the required injection pressure from zero for each injection cycle and are therefore dependent on engine speed and load, resulting in lower performance.

For the Hilux 3.0G engine, there is an air-cooled intercooler to lower the ingoing air temperature so that it can be more dense and oxygenrich. This enhances efficiency and boosts output for better performance. Additionally, the engine is also fitted with a Variable Nozzle Turbocharger (VNT) that can vary airflow speed according to driving conditions to maintain optimum turbocharger boost at all times. The result is improved torque and better power output. Maximum power for the Hilux 3.0G engine is 120 kW (163 ps) at 3,400 rpm and maximum torque of 343 Nm is generated from between 1,400 and 3,200 rpm. This high output and an especially long and flat torque band not only give stronger acceleration in all speed ranges but also enhance fuel efficiency. Also fitted to the Hilux 3.0G is a fuel cooler to reduce the temperature of the diesel fuel that is not consumed and returned to the fuel tank. This is due to the increased engine output which raises operating temperatures. With the fuel cooler, the viscosity of the diesel fuel is not reduced and the fuel delivery efficiency can be maintained. There is also a catalytic converter fitted to the exhaust system of the Hilux 3.0G to protect the environment. The catalyst chemically reacts with the exhaust gases to convert harmful elements into carbon dioxide and moisture. The new Hilux 3.0G is available only with a 4-speed electronically-controlled automatic transmission (ECT) and a part-time 4x4 system with High and Low ranges in the chain-driven transfer case. The 4x4 High range can be selected from 2WD mode while the vehicle is in motion at speeds of up to 80 km/h. Selection of the Low range, however, must be done at speeds below 8 km/h or stationary. Decades of experience in making the Hilux for customers all over the world has shown that the most reliable and robust 4x4 selection method is still the mechanical type. The Hilux also comes with a standard Automatic Disconnecting Differential (ADD) which makes engaging and disengaging 4x4 very convenient, even while the vehicle is on the move. With ADD, there is no need to have free-wheeling hubs that usually require manual locking of the hubs for 4x4 operation. The Hilux uses a time-proven independent double wishbone/coil spring at the front and rear leafspring suspension at the rear which offers good control and comfort, even when the vehicle is lightly loaded. For better handling over rough terrain, the suspension mounts at the front and rear are especially strong at the joints which meet the frame, giving greater rigidity. This also gives better straightline stability, often lacking in pick-ups. The rack and pinion steering system has power-assistance and 15-inch alloy wheels are fitted to the Hilux 3.0G while the standard tyre provided is sized 255/70R15. EXTERIOR STYLING As with the other Hilux variants, the new Hilux 3.0G maintains the same styling theme with the distinctive trapezoidal shape and tough imposing image. A noticeable addition, only for this new variant, is the bulge on the bonnet which is an intake vent for air to directly reach the intercooler mounted on top of the engine. There are no other differences with the other variants but the headlamps now incorporate clear turn signal lamps which enhance the vehicles appearance and improve visibility. At the rear, the high-mounted brake light mounted on the tailgate is illuminated by LEDs (lightemitting diodes) which are more lasting than conventional bulbs and also light up faster to alert drivers behind more quickly. INTERIOR STYLING The stylish exterior design is carried through to the cabin which is comparable in looks and feel to a passenger car. This is not surprising as the interior designers chose the theme of Modern and Professional Gear as they aimed to provide a high-quality cabin. To accentuate the advanced image, silver finishing is used in certain areas. Exclusively for the new Hilux 3.0G is the Optitron instrument panel which is installed behind a smoked acrylic protective cover. Opitron meters were originally developed for use in Lexus models and are also available in selected Toyota models today. They are bright and sharp and can be viewed clearly in any lighting conditions. A position indicator is provided so the driver is aware of which transmission position is engaged at all times. A Multi Information Display (MID) is also provided in a recess in the middle of the dashboard. Besides displaying the time. external temperature and compass direction the vehicle is going towards, there is also information on fuel consumption (average and instantaneous), average speed, elapsed time on the journey and the driving range with the fuel remaining. VERSATILITY & UTILITY Though there is plenty of storage capacity behind the cabin, storage spaces within it are also plentiful, providing security for valuables. There is also a space-saving storage section hidden under the rear seats. It can be used to store valuable items which need to be kept out of sight. Bottle holders are provided on each door and cupholders are available between the front seats. The Hilux also has one special feature which no other pick-up in Malaysia offers. This is the tip-up function for the rear seats. When it is necessary to carry tall items, the rear bench seat can be flipped up against the rear of the cabin to provide extra vertical space. With its spacious rear deck (largest in the segment) measuring 1,520 mm (length) by 1,515 mm (width) and a height of 450 mm, the Hilux

offers ample loading space. Motocross bikes, kayaks, camping gear just about anything needed for an outdoor adventure can be loaded onto the back. For those who may also use the Hilux for their business, ease of loading and a durable deck will be appreciated features as well. COMFORT & CONVENIENCE In keeping with customer demands for high quality audio systems, the Hilux 3.0G comes a new 2-DIN audio unit with USB port for plug-andplay option, besides the standard features FM/AM tuner, CD-player, MP3 capable and AUX-jack. AUX and USB jacks allow connection of digital music players to the audio system so it is unnecessary to transfer your favourite music onto a CD. With MP3 capability, it is now possible to personalise music selections and play a greater number of songs to provide lots of variety on long journeys. Output from the head unit goes through 6 speakers which have been carefully positioned for optimum sound reproduction in the cabin. The speaker system includes two tweeters for additional fidelity. Besides delivering generous amounts of cool air around the cabin, the air-conditioning system also has an air filter which removes airborne dust in the cabin to create a healthier environment. The filter will be particularly useful during journeys off-road where conditions may be dusty. Power windows are standard with the drivers window having automatic up/down operation for greater convenience. There is also jam protection where the glass will stop rising if there is resistance against it eg, when a hand is on it so as to avoid injuries. The wing mirrors can be conveniently adjusted from inside the cabin using the remote adjuster being right next to the steering. For the Hilux 3.0G, there is also a folding feature which will swivel both mirrors inwards at the touch of a button. This is useful when parking in tight spaces as it will minimise the possibility of damage to the mirrors. A seatbelt reminder (in the form of a flashing icon on the instrument panel) is now provided. A sensor in the front passengers seat detects when there is someone sitting on it and will activate the seatbelt reminder. If no one is seated, the reminder light will not come on (but it will do so for the drivers seat). Toyota Premium Solar Film is recommended for the Hilux 3.0G as it can reduce heat build-up within the cabin. This film meets legal requirements and is fully approved by the JPJ. Its installation by UMW Toyota Motors trained personnel ensures high quality and reliability. SAFETY Being a leading manufacturer of automobiles, Toyota has always been conscious of the need to also ensure that its vehicles are safe to use and should there be an accident, the occupants will have the best possible protection against injuries. With this in mind, the Hilux 3.0G has many Active and Passive safety features which can also be found in Toyota passenger cars. These include an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Load-sensing proportioning & bypass valve, Limited Slip Differential (LSD) on the rear axle, large 15-inch ventilated discs in front and SRS airbags for both front occupants. While Active Safety helps the driver avoids accidents, Passive Safety provides protection when the vehicle is involved in an accident. For starters, the body is GOA-certified which means it satisfies the tough in-house safety standards of Toyota which are defined in GOA Global Outstanding Assessment. All Toyota models must pass GOA and this standard is not static as it is regularly revised and typically is ahead of most international safety requirements. For the Hilux, the cabins interior structure is designed to reduce injuries to the head in the event that the occupants heads hit the sides. Besides the various unseen features that provide body strengthening, the Hilux body also has reinforcement beams inside the side doors. These provide extra resistance against side collisions as the doors themselves are mostly hollow in construction. Theres also a steering column which collapses so that it does not get pushed against the driver during a frontal collision, and the brake pedal will also collapse for the same reason. All three rear occupants have seatbelts, the two nearest the door having 3-point types while the centre occupant has a 2-point lap belt. Laminated glass, which does not shatter on most impacts, is also standard for the Hilux so that there are no sharp broken bits of glass which can cause injuries. SECURITY The new Hilux is equipped with a comprehensive security system that meets the UK Thatcham-1 security standard, the highest for vehicle security systems. It consists of an engine immobiliser, tilt sensor (to prevent unauthorized towing), hyper-frequency sensor (to detect cabin intrusion) and a back-up battery for the siren. Custom-designed for the new Hilux, it has been fully tested by UMW Toyota Motor in all kinds of conditions. For added safety while driving, the doors will also lock automatically when the vehicle exceeds a certain speed after moving off. OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES Hilux customers can also include a Bedliner and Sport Bar when they purchase a new vehicle. The bedliner is made of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and specially designed for the Hilux. It comes moulded to accept partitions so that separate compartments can be created on the deck. The Sport Bar which enhances the looks of the Hilux is made of tough Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) plastic and stainless steel for durability and strength. WARRANTY As with many of the models offered by UMW Toyota Motor, the new Toyota Hilux 3.0G comes with a 3-year/ 100,000 km (whichever occurs

earlier after first registration) warranty, subject to conditions stated in the Owners Handbook. This reflects the confidence Toyota has in the superior build quality of its vehicles as well as the proven reliability and durability of the Hilux for the past 40 years.
