4.0 PURPOSE

4.1 To ensure proper installation of the sewage treatment system.

4.2 To demonstrate the operational capabilities of the sewage treatment system.

4.3 To ensure functionality of control/safety devices.

4.4 To demonstrate the function of Monitoring Alarm System

1 1 4.5 To ensure that sewage treatment plant is as per requirement of MARPOL 73/78 (The International
Convention for the prevention of Marine Pollution from ships 1973,1978 Protocol and later amendments

5.0 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

5.1 System:
The purpose of the Sewage Treatment System is to treat discharges from the water closets, in order to
comply with MARPOL requirements for the quality of discharged effluent. The sewage treatment plant
1 1 is designed for 150 persons and each person waste is 70 litres per day. The black water collecting
system is direct gravity system and Black water and all drains from hospital in living quarter are led to
Sewage Treatment Plant.

5.2 Mechanical:
One (1) set of Sewage Treatment Unit is installed in Stbd Fwd Aux. Machinery Room. The Sewage
Treatment Unit operates on the extended aeration principle, with air supplied from a built-in rotary air
1 1 blower to promote digestion by bacteria of the incoming sewage. An activated sludge is separated in
the settling tank and clarified water floats to the contact tank. The activated sludge is pumped back to
the aeration tank by air driven ejector. A chlorine base disinfection chemical is added by dosing pump
in to contact before being finally discharged overboard by a discharge pump.

5.3 Electrical & Instrumentation:

Power supply to the Sewage Treatment Unit is obtained through a breaker in the 480VAC Main
Switchboard. A remote common alarm for the Sewage Treatment Unit is incorporated in the
Monitoring Alarm Panel located in the Electrical workshop.

5.4 Piping:
Discharge from the water closet drain lines is routed to the sewage treatment unit. Clean discharge
from the sewage treatment units is routed overboard via the deck drainage system to the funnel on
vessel transom. A sea water inlet is provided for flushing.

9.1 Fill the sewage treatment plant with initial charge of
seawater until water flows through the chlorinator.
9.2 Open the inlet valves for both discharge pumps no.1 and 2
and vent all air from the pump housing by opening the
venting plug.
9.3 Ensure that all valves in the air supply line are open.
Switch on the air blower and check for correct rotation. Do
not allow motors to run in wrong direction for more than 3
seconds. When operating correctly, check the reading on
the pressure gauge and record pressure on both
compressors.
