Initial Goals:

Goal (1): The student will improve their decoding skills.

The student displays the ability to decode very simple, one syllable words both in
isolation and in text. However, he does not yet possess the ability to decode many multi-syllabic
words. Because this student is in 6th grade, it is imperative that he learn this skill as it will
significantly improve his ability to comprehend the texts he reads.
Goal (2): The student will identify subjects and verbs and accurately answer comprehension
questions.
Currently, the student can read some texts accurately, but the comprehension portion of
reading needs to be further developed. He can understand text, but he does need to be explicitly
taught the simple sentence structure to thoroughly understand and remember what he is reading
about. In other words, he needs to transition into reading to learn instead of learning to read.

Extended Goals:
Goal (1): The student will improve their decoding skills.
I honestly would not change this goal. I would continue practicing this skill by giving
him tier 1 and tier 2 vocabulary with 1 or 2 tier 3 vocabulary words within the list. As he builds
on his decoding skills, he needs to be challenged by spreading his vocabulary with less familiar
words. He would then need to be provided with texts that include these words and other words
similar to them in order for him to see them in context which will help with comprehension.

Goal (2): The student will identify subjects and verbs and accurately answer comprehension
questions.
Revised Goal: The student will identify subjects, verbs, adverbs, and adjectives and accurately
answer comprehension questions.
This student will be able to master this initial goal in a couple lessons which means he
will then need to be introduced to adjectives and adverbs. Yes, he has probably read adjectives
and adverbs in texts before but if he knows that the function of those words is to describe the
subjects and verbs, it will aid his comprehension.
