PREFACE

Asking questions is always the best way to start a conversation. Good questions encourage people
to open up about themselves and divulge their thoughts and feelings on a wide variety of topics.
They’re the secret behind getting acquainted with someone you have recently met. So, when
someone asks you a question, it means they are interested in your opinion. Thus we could say that
there is something powerful about questions that force you to think, look within yourself, examine
your heart, and search for answers. And it’s in the process of responding to those questions that
you often make discoveries about yourself—things you never even realized before.

Hence, this Speaking Coaching Module has been developed to give students opportunity to express
their thoughts and ideas as well as develop their critical and analytical thinking as they answer the
questions in this module. The questions are related to the articles or reading passages from the
Reading Speaking Coaching Module.

Each day or lesson has five situations or questions for students to answer. However, students
should not just answer or give their opinion but they have to try to use some of the expressions
given in their answers. There is also sample answer for the first questions in each lesson.

making major decision, but I made one anyway. I took a big risk investing my 10 years saving
in a small company. I don’t know what happened to the company because I was busy with my
studies before so I was not able to monitor my little investment.

Question 1:
1. Have you ever watched an interesting spy movie? If yes, tell me about it.

be absorbed in be immune to
be beneficial to be incompatible with
be composed of be inferior to
be conscious of be necessary for
be critical of be notorious for
be dangerous to be painful to
be deficient in be resistant to
be fit for

Sample Answer:

‘The Spy Next Door’ starring Jackie Chan as Bob Ho and Amber Valleta as Gillian,
is one of my favorite spy movies. It is about Bob Ho, a CIA agent, who decided to quit his
job and marry his girlfriend, Gillian. However, it is necessary for him to gain the approval
of Gillian’s children first. At first, they are critical of him, thinking that he’s a nerd and
boring but soon, they found out about his true identity and finally agreed that he is the best
candidate for their mother’s love.

Jackie Chan is fit for this role because he had a lot of experience in action movies
as well as comedy movies. However, this movie has received negative reviews among
viewers, claiming it as inferior to any of his other movies. Accordingly, it is composed of
cliché plot and cringe-worthy stunts. Nonetheless, I still had fun watching this movie.

Sample Answer:

A lot of people are alarmed by theories of apocalypse. However, scientists estimated that
Earth will remain habitable for another 1-3 billion years. Hence, I believe we shouldn’t be
concerned about this matter. It is also for this reason that I refuse to be enlisted in the Mars
One Project. Movies such as ‘The Martian’ and ‘The Last Days on Mars’ tells us to be
prepared for the possibility of death before or even upon arrival. Also, it is apparent to
everyone that Mars isn’t exactly a passable habitat for humans. It might be essential to
humanity in the future but I believe there are other ways I could contribute to the human
race which doesn’t necessarily involve going to other planets.

Sample Answer:

Job is important for everyone but it would be nice to have fun while doing it, for instance,
jobs that involves our hobbies. However, I believe turning a hobby into a career is not a
good idea. Hobbies are our way of relaxation, so it is more pleasurable because we only
do it once in a while or in our leisure time. Also, it is typical of us to get tired of something
easily. Hence, if we do it as a job, it may lose its appeal and soon, you will realize that the
hobby which you were once attached to is becoming less and less exciting. In the end, you
may lose your job and your hobby. Finally, you might come short of a stable income
because it doesn’t necessarily involve much monetary benefit.

Sample Answer:

Crime scene technicians hold an important role in collecting and analyzing evidences.
They usually start their investigation by doing a survey on the crime scene which is usually
cluttered with physical evidences such as fluids, fibers, weapons and fingerprints
connected with the suspect. Most often than not they are confronted with horrible crime
scenes involving brutal murders and lots of blood. Therefore, a crime scene technician
should be equipped with elite analytical skills as well as proficiency in scientific software
to be able to analyze the evidence gathered. Also, they take detailed photos for
reconstruction of the crime scene in cases of damaged or lost evidences. In court, they
may also be asked to explain the results derived from all the evidences gathered. Hence,
they serve a crucial role in solving crimes.

Many of us are unfamiliar with the benefits of drinking water; however it is one
of the most important factors to a healthy life. According to a blogger who is an expert in
health matters, women should drink at least 2. 7 liters and 3.7 liters for men. So, I try to
drink as much as I can. Actually, I am hopeless at keeping my schedule for exercise but
sometimes if am up to it, I do simple exercises such as stretching, sit-up, and others at

Sample Answer:

Some people are blessed with the ability to adapt to changes in the weather; however

I don’t feel enthusiastic about going out in freezing temperature. I just wanted to be
cooped up in my room watching TV all day. However, I realized I should be committed to
maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Hence, I take a brisk walk near my house as a day-starter.
Sometimes, if I am up to it, I do yoga for a few minutes. I also keep myself occupied by
making DIY crafts recommended online. After doing these activities, I was astonished by
its effectiveness. I don’t feel depressed nor do I feel bothered by the weather. It is clear to

Sample Answer:

Salt has always been a part of our everyday lives. However, we aren’t well
informed about its other usage. Aside from enhancing the taste of our meals, it can also be
an alternative to dishwashers. If you are lazy about having to scrub stained and greasy
dishes over and over again, rub salt on it and wash with water. Also, you wouldn’t be glad
about a stain on your carpet, right? Recently, I discovered that salt can remove stains from
cloth, too. Just cover the stain with salt then rinse it afterwards. Further, you don’t need to
be discouraged about your yellowish teeth. Mix salt to baking soda when brushing. After
regular use, you may have pearly white teeth. It is a great remedy for cleaning, so in no

Speaking B1

Sample Answer:

Sometimes, I feel frustrated with my life. I feel like everything is just a routine. I
just had to wake up and do the same thing over and over again. However, I feel grateful
because my friends are great at cheering me up. They are dedicated to helping me recover
from my depression. They make me smile, laugh and do fun activities. Hence, I am
convinced of the power of laughter. As a matter of fact, when I’m finished with my work,
I watch funny videos or comedy movies online or think of funny events that happened
recently. Although it doesn’t necessarily cure severe illness, it brightens our mood and
allows us to have a different approach to facing life’s trials.

Have you ever laughed at something you shouldn’t have – something very serious?
