Question 1

A smart phone manufacturer is able to produce 500 amount of phone a day. If the profit for daily
profit is represented by the function

𝑃(𝑥) = −x 2 − 800𝑥
where 𝑥 is the unit sold, show that the maximum daily profit is achieved when less than 500 unit of
phone are sold.

Question 2

Given the function

𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 − 3
and

𝑎 = 0,   𝑏 = 3,   𝑐 = 5
Show that
𝑐 𝑏 𝑐
∫ 𝑓(𝑥)dx = ∫ 𝑓(𝑥)dx + ∫ 𝑓(𝑥)dx
𝑎 𝑎 𝑏

Question 3

The national health expenditures are projected to grow at the rate of

𝑟(𝑡) = 0.0058𝑡 + 0.159 (0 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 13)

trillion dollars/year from 2002 through 2015. Here, 𝑡 = 0 corresponds to 2002. The expenditure in
2002 was $1.60 trillion. Show that the function 𝑓 giving the projected national health expenditure in
year 𝑡 is

𝑓(𝑡) = 0.0029𝑡 2 + 0.159𝑡 + 1.6

Question 4

The figure above illustrates the approximation of the area under the curve using trapezoidal method.
Using the figure as a guide, show that the integration of the function 𝑓(𝑥) from 𝑎 to 𝑏, can be
approximated as
𝑏
∆𝑥
∫ 𝑓(𝑥) = (𝑓(𝑥0 ) + 2𝑓(𝑥1 ) + 2𝑓(𝑥2 ) + 𝑓(𝑥3 ))
