ABSTRACT

Modern times have been dominated by information

technology and globalization. In contrast, globalization is
reducing the importance of geographical boundaries due to
the growth of information technology. It has been difficult to
cope with these changes as libraries are important institutions
within society. Library core competency is to retrieve, store,
and transmit information.

Since digitalization has taken over the world and a library has
lost its main function as a result, the Treasury and the temple of
knowledge are losing importance. Building public libraries can
bridge what is often called the ‘ digital divide ’, by getting
everyone involved in this global conversation. Library materials
are provided for the city's self-education, recreation, and
social development through this public library, which
promotes a wider reading culture and motivates readers and
learners for life. In addition to providing access to physical
and digital data, a public library also facilitates interaction
between people. Knowledge progresses through the
exchange of ideas between people from diverse
backgrounds and ages visiting libraries.
INTRODUCTION
The beauty of sitting in a library for hours, sometimes from one
morning till the next, the occasional breaks over snacks
followed by a discussion about some knotty topic, a walk
through the stacks of encyclopedias and databases, or the
sheer inspiration from those bending over books all around
you... There is a certain smell and color to a library.

Even in an era when most Indians are mobile data

empowered, the fact is, for the seeds of learning to
develop into knowledge and wisdom, an enabling
environment plays a more important role.

A library is not a building stacked with books – it is a repository

and source of information and ideas, a place for learning and
inquiry, and for the generation of thought and the creation of
new knowledge. Public libraries in particular have the
potential to bridge the gap between the ‘information poor’
and the ‘information rich’ by ensuring that people from all
sectors and settings of society and the economy across India
have easy access to the knowledge they seek.
WHAT IS A KNOWLEDGE CENTRE
A knowledge center is a social institution and it is mainly
concerned with the education, and social and cultural
activities of the people in the society. The KC is the local
gateway to knowledge and provides basic conditions for
lifelong learning, independent decision-making, and social-
economical and cultural development of individual and
social groups.

A Knowledge Centre, .using computer and communication

technologies and guidance of management and subject
experts collects knowledge under an interrelated system. so
that duplication is avoided, knowledge is pooled
systematically, and is used and also forwarded to the National
Knowledge Centre for wider use in various contexts. It also
takes into account knowledge available locally and makes it
available in local languages.
IN WESTERN CULTURE
In Western countries, Libraries are still the most loved and
popular hangout places. The multiple functionalities of a
Library make it useful for people of different age groups and
choices. Libraries were and remain statements of prestige as
well as aesthetic and architectural sophistication. These
houses of knowledge and their appropriation have inspired
secular and spiritual authorities since the Early Modern Era to
devote particular attention to their design and décor.
In contrast, India has the idea of Public Libraries all wrong.
WHY KNOWLEDGE CENTRE
A Library is a communal place so adds to the importance of
community in our lives. A library offers us education,
relaxation, and access to all sorts of books, magazines, music,
and movies that we could never afford to buy. It is a safe
place to meet friends, use the internet or get help with school
assignments. It is a place where all walks of life may be
present, including children, youth, and the aged.

In an era where sustainability is becoming a necessity, a library

is a provider. A library has a great importance of its own. For a
person of average means, it is difficult to purchase more than
one or two daily newspapers or monthly magazines, but it is
the keen desire of educated people to know all possible
shades of opinion as expressed in different newspapers. Also, it
is not possible to buy every book that you are interested to
read.

Hence library provides an effective alternative where you

need to pay a small number of membership fees and you can
get access to a variety of books, newspapers, and magazines,
etc.,
WHY MADURAI
Heritage Temple City of Madurai, Tamil Nādu, South India, was
closely associated with Tamil Literature during its glory days
under the rule of Pandya Kings centuries ago. Linguistic
experts believe Tamil is one of the oldest languages in the
world if you study its history. Madurai has been an academic
center of learning for Tamil culture, literature, art, music, and
dance for centuries.[136] All three assemblies of the Tamil
language, the Tamil Sangam (about the 3rd century BCE to
the 3rd century CE), were said to have been held at
Madurai.[137] Tamil poets of different epochs participated in
these assemblies, and their compositions are referred to
as Sangam literature. During the third Tamil Sangam, the
comparative merit of the poets was decided by letting the
works float in the lotus tank of the temple. It was believed that
a divine force would cause the work of superior merit to float
on the surface, while the inferior ones would sink.
