Laboratory Activity 7. The Nervous System

1.Draw and label a neuron showing the following parts:

i. Cell body
ii. Axon
iii. Dendrites

2. List down the glial cells and give their specific function.

GLIAL CELLS FUNCTION

GLIAL CELLS IN CNS

Astrocytes  support neurons and blood vessels

 influence the functioning of the blood-
brain barrier
 guide migration of young neurons
Microglial cells  monitoring their health, and when they
sense that certain neurons are injured or
in other trouble, the microglial cells
migrate toward them.

Ependymal cells  form a permeable barrier between the

cerebrospinal fluid that fills those cavities
and the tissue fluid bathing the cells of the
CNS. The beating of their cilia helps to
circulate the cerebrospinal fluid that
cushions the brain and spinal cord
Oligodendrocytes  line up along the thicker nerve fibres in the
CNS and wrap their processes tightly
around the fibres, producing an insulating
covering called a myelin sheath
GLIAL CELLS IN PNS
Satellite cells  support and nourish neuron cell bodies
within ganglia
Schwann cells  surround all nerve fibers in the PNS and
form myelin sheaths around the thicker
nerve fibers
 vital to regeneration of damaged
peripheral nerve fibers

3. Draw and label the lateral view of the brain showing the following parts:
i. All lobes and cerebellum
ii. All fissures / sulci

4. Complete the table regarding the lobes of the brain and their major function.

3. Temporal lobe Sensation and interpretation of sounds
4. Occipital lobe Visual brain (appreciation of size, shape and color)
5. Insula buried deep within the lateral sulcus and forms part of its floor
