Lesson 1: Application Letter

• Have you ever tried applying for a job?
• If yes, have you tried writing an application letter?
• What did you feel when your application letter got accepted and your
employer called you?
Application letter is a sales
letter in which a job applicant
market his or her skills,
abilities, experiences and
knowledge.
• Date and header
• Salutation
• Opening paragraph
• Body paragraph
• Closing paragraph
• Complimentary close

Suggested by Covey (2012) and The Writing Center, University of


North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2020):
- write the actual date of your submission. Also, address the letter to a specific
person and exact position at the company/institution you are applying to. You
can google the exact name and position, or you can inquire by telephone.

- when addressing the letter to a specific person, you need to start with a formal
salutation such as “Dear Mr. Reyes”. Make sure to know the name of the HR manager
or Hiring department. Refrain from using: To whom it may concern or Dear Sir or
Madam.You have to specify the name.

a. grab the attention of the reader/employer
b. mention how you heard about the job

POINTS TO CONSIDER FOR FINALIZING
YOUR APPLICATION LETTER
 Check for spelling errors and typos—professionalism is a must. You are marketing
yourself and your school as well.
 Do not go over a page. As much as possible, your letter should be ONE PAGE ONLY.
 Maintain professional tone throughout the letter.
 Do not forget your signature.
 Observe proper format.
