Pavement Design and Analysis - Dr. Laith Tashman
Assignment#1

1) Given the following results of sieve analysis of coarse aggregates:

Sieve Size Weight Retained

3/4 in 14.8
1/2 in 16.3

b) Plot the gradation curve on a 0.45 power gradation chart.

c) What is the maximum size and nominal maximum size of the aggregates
according to the Superpave criteria?

2) Laboratory specific gravity and absorption are run on two coarse aggregates, which
are to be blended with 60% aggregate A and 40% aggregate B by weight:

Aggregate A: Bulk dry specific gravity = 2.81; absorption = 0.4%

Aggregate B: Bulk dry specific gravity = 2.44; absorption = 5.2 %

a) What is the specific gravity of the blend?

b) What is the absorption of the blend?
3) Three aggregate stockpiles are designated as A, B, and C.
a) Determine an aggregate blend of stockpiles A, B, and C that meets specifications.
b) Plot the gradations of the aggregate blend you produced in part (a) as well as the
specifications (lower and upper limits) on 0.45 power gradation chart.

the gradation required. What are the combined specific gravity and absorption values?
