THE TEXT :

1 John Cooper, 69, and his 64-year-old wife Susan passed away after falling ill in their
room at the Steigenberger Aqua Magic Hotel in the Egyptian resort of Hurghada on
Tuesday, August 2. Originally from Burnley, Lancashire, the couple were on the "holiday
of a lifetime" which they had booked through Thomas Cook with their daughter. Mrs
Cooper was a long-serving staff member at her local Thomas Cook travel agency, which
was closed as a mark of respect following news of her death.
2 Speaking to the BBC following their deaths, devastated daughter Kelly, 40, said she
found her parents seriously ill in their hotel room . She told the BBC: "The evening before
we went to bed, we were all having a lovely family meal and they were fit and healthy."
Kelly said two doctors came to see John at the hotel. She added: "They didn't really see to
Mum because they could see that Dad was more ill and he took priority."They tried
basically to save his life and they couldn't.
3 A public prosecutor in Egypt confirmed the lethal E.coli bacteria was a factor in the
tragic couple's demise as he detailed an official medical report. An inspection of the
couple's hotel room revealed there were no toxic or harmful gas emissions or leaks. The
couple's daughter immediately rejected the Egyptian findings. "The Egyptians are looking
for someone to blame and I don't believe for one minute that caused their deaths,” she told
Sky News.
4 Thomas Cook conducted its own investigation at the hotel in the days after the
Coopers’ deaths and found “a high level of E.Coli” in the food which caused widespread
illness among tourists.  Following the couple's death, Thomas Cook announced they were
evacuating 300 of their guests from the hotel. The company added: "For those customers
who choose to come home, we have made arrangements to fly them back today”."While
we understand this is upsetting for those on holiday, we believe this is the right thing to
do. "We will be contacting those customers due to travel to the Steigenberger Aqua Magic
Hotel in Hurghada in the next four weeks to offer alternative holiday options," the
statement added.
