GeneralInformation Famine has been declared in parts of Middle Shabelle, IDP settlements along the Afgooye Corridor, partsofMogadishuhostingIDPs,LowerShabelleandpartsofBakool Famineisexpectedtospreadacrossallregionsofthesouthinthecomingfourtosixweeks Tensofthousandsofpeoplehavediedandmanymorelivesareatrisk 3.7millionpeople,morethanhalfthepopulation, requirehumanitarianassistancea35%increase from2.4millioninthebeginningoftheyear Cerealpricesareatanalltimehigh,withthecostofsomecommoditiesupby270%insomeareasin thesouth Thecostofthefoodbaskethasincreasedby50%inthesouthernregions. Malnutrition 1.25 million children are in urgent need of malnutrition treatment of these, 640,000 are acutely malnourished ThehighestGlobalAcuteMalnutritionRate(GAM)in18surveyscarriedoutrecentlyexceeded50%in GedoandBakoolagropastoralareas(thisisabovethe15%WHOthreshold) Mortalityrateshavereachedahighof15per10,000inchildrenunder5amongMogadishuIDPs Displacement Nearly one quarter of Somalias 7.5 million people are displaced either within Somalia or to neighboringcountriesespeciallyKenyaandEthiopia 27,000 people have been displaced into Mogadishu and its environs from other southern regions in Julyalone Atotal100,000peopleweredisplacedintoMogadishuinJuneandJuly 40,400SomalisarrivedinDadaabrefugeecampsinKenyainJulyanaverage1,300peopleperday. Funding ConsolidatedAppealforSomalia: TherevisedCAPisseekingapproximatelyUS$1billion,anincreasefrom$561inDecember2010 Only43%$453millionhasbeenfundedandanadditional$49millionhasbeenpledged. CommonHumanitarianFund(CHF): In2011,$35millionofthe$45millionavailablethroughthesecondStandardAllocationoftheCHFwas allocatedtodroughtresponseactivitiesfocusingonfood,livelihoods,waterandhealthsectors $13.6 million has been allocated through the emergency reserve for drought response from January 2011todate. CentralEmergencyResponseFund(CERF): $15millionwasallocatedfromtheunderfundedwindowtoaddressthedroughtsituationinthemost affectedareasofsouthandcentralregionsofSomalia InJulytheCERFrapidresponsewindowreleased$28millionforthemostimmediateneedsincluding accesstofood.
