1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 PROJECT BACKGROUND

The purpose of the project is to provide a containerized or a skid mounted wastewater treatment plant to
treat a portion of wastewater evaporation pond.

The evaporation pond is used to drain the de-oiled wastewater from the Juaymah Terminal.

1.2 PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This contract is to supply, operate, and maintain a wastewater treatment system (skid or containerized unit)
to treat the Juaymah Tank Farm evaporation pond wastewater for disposal into the marine environment.

1.3 DOCUMENT SCOPE

The scope of this document is to present an overview and give the results of the pilot test study on the
performance of multimedia filter and activated carbon filter in the TSS and COD removal.

1.4 DEFINITION

For the purpose of this document, the following definitions shall apply:

Project : Design, Supply Installation, Testing, Commissioning and operation of

wastewater treatment plant.

Contractor : EPPM “Engineering Procurement & Project Management”

Supplier : The party manufacturing and/or supplying the materials, equipment and
services required to perform the duties as specified by the Contractor.

2 METHOD AND MATERIAL

Organic matter in the effluent water as well as the performance of the ceramic filter have presented many
challenges during the last performance test of the plant. For that, a pilot test was conducted to enhance
organic matter and suspended solid removal to substitute the ceramic filter. The tested process combination
included the clarification, multimedia sand filtration and activated carbon filtration. The source water for
the pilot test has been took from the outlet of the degassing unit. The efficiency of process was assayed by
measuring the COD, Ammonia, turbidity, pH and residual chlorine at the effluent water. A sample was also
sent to laboratory for detailed analysis.

The pilot multimedia filter and activated carbon filter have been constructed as per the below table:

Table 1: Multimedia filter and activated carbon filter characteristics

Figure 3: Activated carbon

The test was conducted as per the below configuration:

- The inlet flowrate to the plant was adjusted at 30 m3/h.

- Aluminum sulfate has been injected at the inlet of the DAF as a coagulant. The pH at the DAF is
around 7.1. The coagulation works very well, a large number of sufficiently large flocs are produced,
which neither float up nor sediment in the DAF.

Figure 4: Operating conditons of the DAF

- After the DAF, the caustic soda 50% has been injected to increase the pH to around 10.5 to
precipitate the dissolved material and to allow the proper pH for Ammonia removal.

Figure 5: pH at the existing clarifier

- After the clarifier, the sodium hypochlorite 12% has been injected for Ammonia and COD
oxidation.

- After the injection of sodium hypochlorite 12 %, the water reaches the degasing tower for
Ammonia stripping by countercurrent aeration.

- After the degasing tower, the water is fed into the aeration zone where the pH is adjusted to around
9.5 by injecting the HCL 33 %.

- After around one hour of operation as per the above configuration the plant has been stopped and
suspended solid allowed to settle in the aeration zone to simulate new clarifier.

- After 30 min of settlement, one of the injection pumps has been used to feed the pilot multimedia
filter and the activated carbon filter from the aeration zone.
