School Budgetary Needs Assessment Survey

Prior to the proposal of a new budget for the upcoming school year, school leaders must

go through the process of completing a budget review. As part of the review process leaders

must conduct a needs assessment that allows leaders to identify the current student and school

needs. The school budget must align with the CIP therefore the focus is to review to see what is

working and areas of opportunity. It is necessary to have stakeholders involved in the decision

making and review process. Once the collection of the historical data from the previous budget

has been collected the new school budget can be created.

Aside from the stakeholders in the school we should also be open to taking the input of

parents and other members of the community. According to PSEL Standard 8 “Effective

educational leaders engage families and the community in meaningful, reciprocal, and mutually

beneficial ways to promote each student’s academic success and well-being”. By having parents

and community members become part of the process will allow all stakeholders to have a voice,

The element C of the PSEL Standard 8 mentions that an effective leader “Engages in regular and

open two-way communication with families and the community about the school, students,

needs, problems, and accomplishments” (PSEL, 2015), that will ensure that the students’ needs

are met.

There are other key data points that would need to be gathered as part of a comprehensive

school needs assessment. We would have to gather historical data regarding student’s test scores

so that we will be able to determine what has worked and what did not. Test scores allow the

budget to align with the school’s goals, therefore this is a key data point. Another data point that

should be considered would be the CIP previous goals, this will allow the review process to look

over what should be kept for the new budget or adjusted. Overall, the inputs that have been

mission, and the CIP.
