LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET IN GRADE 10 MATHEMATICS

Activity No.: 3 (Second Trimester)

Activity Title: The Arc-Chord Theorem
Learning Target/s: At the end of the lesson, the students CAN:
1. prove theorems related to arcs and chords.
1.1 state the Arc-Chord Theorem; and
1.2 compute for the measurement of arcs and chords.
Reference/s: Soaring 21st Century Mathematics pages 176-177
Value/s: Perseverance

I. Essential Ideas

Arc-Chord Equal Theorem

In the same circle or in equal circles, equal arcs have equal chords.

C
Illustrative Examples: A
1. In ⨀ O, if arc AB = arc CD, then AB = CD
.O
If AB = 4 then CD is also 4.

D
B

2. In ⨀ Q, if arc AC = arc AB, AC = 2x + 18 and AB = 5x + 3. Find x, AC and AB.

Solution:
Since arc AC = arc AB, by Arc-Chord Equal Theorem A
Then, AC = AB
2x + 18 = 5x + 3
15 = 3x
Q
x =5
B C
Therefore, AC = 2(5) + 18 or 28 units. Since AC = AB, then AB= 28 units.

II. Learning Experiences

A. Clarifying Understanding
I. Directions: Write A if you agree to the given statement and D if you disagree to the given statement.
Consider circle O to answer items 1-5.

_____ 1. arc AC = arc BD

_____ 2. If AB = 6, then CD = ½ (6)

_____ 3. If AB is x + 3 and CD is 5, then x=2.

II. Directions: Solve for the value of x and identify the values of the arcs of the circle.
1. In ⨀ I, if arc OC = arc OP, OP = x + 10 and OC = 5x -2. Find x, OC and OP.

B. Mastery Exercises
I. Directions: Write T if the given statement is true and F if it is false. Consider circle P to answer the items
Below.

___ 1. BC = AF

___ 2. If AF = 10, then BC = 10 (2)

___ 3. If AF is 2x +3 and CD is 7, then x=1.

II. Directions: Solve for the value of x and identify the values of the arcs of the circle.
1. In ⨀ P, if arc AB = arc FC, AB = 4x - 5 and FC = 2x+3. Find x, AB and FC.
