P1066 True Wind Interface Data Sheet - Issue 2 (Inc Drawings)
P1066 True Wind Interface Data Sheet - Issue 2 (Inc Drawings)
The Walker P1066 True Wind Interface calculates True Wind Angle and Speed and also
Theoretical Wind Angle and Speed from the best available data.
Using any combination of NMEA 0183 “VBW”, “VHW”, “HDT”, “VTG” and “MWV”
(Relative) sentences, input on any of the three input channels, the P1066 extracts data which is
then used to calculate True and Theoretical Wind Angle and Speed. This resultant data is then
sent to Output Channel 1 (on EMC socket) and Output Channel 3 connection terminals, as
NMEA “MWV” (Theoretical) and NMEA “MWD” sentences.
Any NMEA 0183 “VBW”, “VHW”, “HDT”, “VTG” and “MWV” (Relative) sentences seen on
input channels 1, 2 and 3, are checked for validity and passed through to output channels 1 and 3,
at a rate of 1 per second.
Any two input “MWV” (Relative) NMEA sentences with Relative Wind Speed in the one and
Relative Wind Angle in the other are combined into 1 message and passed through to output
channels 1 and 3.
Irrespective of the frequency of input NMEA sentences, all NMEA output sentences are sent at a
rate of 1 per second. The most up to date data is always transmitted.
Any propitiatory PLG Remote dimming sentences, seen on input channel 3, are checked for
validity and passed through to output channel 2 (on EMC socket).
The interface therefore provides Walker Analogue, and Digital, “relative”, “true” and
“theoretical” wind indicators (P305 / P316 series) with appropriate NMEA 0183 serial data input
from the connected EMC socket. Output channel 3 is available for connecting to Walker P1249
Wind Data Displays or to other listeners.
.
A “power fail” alarm circuit is included.
24vDC outputs are available at each of the three Input Channels for powering the full range of
Walker wind sensors, remote dimmer, or other appropriate talkers on the system concerned.
An “L” shaped plate is used to clamp overall screen of cables used to the interface. Further, five
“earth” terminals; fitted to an internal “grounding” bar, allow for connection of any additional
screens of individual or multiple twisted pair cables that may be involved.
The “earth” lead, attached to the external earth stud must be suitably bonded to ship’s earth to
provide full EMC protection.

TRUE WIND INTERFACE
The unit requires a 24vDC power supply. A diode is fitted for polarity protection and transient
voltage protection is also included.
Maximum current consumption is 250mA when interface is powered up but is not providing 24v
DC feed to other units.
INSTALLATION
The unit is not watertight and must be fitted below deck in a protected position that will allow
for all interconnections. Accessibility of the box, both for diagnostic purposes, and for any
possible future replacement, also needs to be taken into consideration. Four mounting holes are
provided externally, through fitted grommets; one at each corner of the base plate for mounting
to either a horizontal, or to a vertical surface, using M4 pan head screws (or equivalent self
tapping screws) and washers.
A slot in the side of the box allows for cable entry and the “L” shaped plate with its attached
conductive fabric wrap allows the exposed overall screen of the cables concerned to be clamped
to the conductive fabric wrap attached to the base plate. The “L” shaped clamp plate runs on two
pozi-pan head screws and having brought the plate down sufficiently to compress the fabric
wrap against the laid in cables / screens, hold the plate in position and tighten the screws to
secure cables.
To ensure full EMC transient protection, the fitted M6 “earth” stud must be suitably bonded to
“ship’s earth” using the lead provided.
See drawing 3398-A3-2: installation drawing of the P1066 Wind Indicator Interface.
CABLING
The free plug of the 1 metre cable assembly, supplied with a P305 / P316 series wind indicator,
is connected directly to the EMC socket fitted on the Interface Box.
Whilst recommended core sizes are specified for all shipyard cabling, cables having stranded
cores up to a maximum 2.5mm CSA can be accommodated by the plug in terminal headers
concerned.
A twisted pair cable with overall screen, 16/0.2mm (0.5mm CSA), is required for connecting the
ships 24vDC supply. DC power connections are as follows:
1
Overall screens of cables, which have been exposed and suitably clamped to the conductive fabric wrap, are
sufficient for EMC requirements. If any shipyard cables have been used that have twisted screened pairs and an
overall screen, then the overall screen must attach to the conductive fabric wrap, with the other screens being taken
to appropriate “Earth” terminals on the internal grounding bar.

TRUE WIND INTERFACE
CABLING continued
All Walker serial data masthead sensors are connected using Walker P293 cable assemblies. The
cable concerned is four core with an overall screen. Two cores carry power up to the masthead
unit with the NMEA 0183 serial data (“MWV” relative sentence) processed by the masthead
sensor being carried back down on the other two cores. Refer to the P293 data sheet for
additional information.
Refer to details below for wind sensor input connections and see also drawing 3398-A3-4.
A Walker P292 or P296 Combined Wind Sensor, connected into Input Channel 1 or 2,
would leave the other Input Channel available to accept other suitable NMEA data from
another talker. Note that if no Walker Wind Sensors are used, Input Channels 1 and 2 are
both available to accept NMEA data from other talkers. If multiple NMEA 0183 sentences
are to be input into a single Input Channel they must be multiplexed before being input.
Note that, if required, each available Input Channel also contains a 24vDC output for
powering the talker/s concerned. Maximum current consumption of 500mA is available on
each of these channels.
Separately input NMEA 0183 data can be carried on a twisted pair cable with overall screen,
16/0.2mm (0.5mm CSA). If 24vDC power is also to be provided by the P1066 interface, from
either Input Channel 1 or Input Channel 2, to power the talker concerned, then either a twin
twisted pair cable with overall screen or a twin twisted screened pair cable with overall screen,
16/0.2mm (0.5mm CSA), can be used.
If the P325 Remote Dimming Control is to be fitted; connections between the P1066 True Wind
Interface and a P328 Universal Junction Box are necessary. Connections must be made using the
terminals stated below. Note it is recommended that Input Channel 3 of the P1066 be used to
connect through to a P325:-
This cable is to be provided by shipyard. Either a twin twisted pair cable with overall screen or a
twin twisted screened pair cable with overall screen may be used. In all instances cores of
16/0.2mm (0.5mm CSA) are recommended.
The P328 Universal Junction Box allows for inter-connection of this cable through to the P325
Remote Dimming Control. Refer to P325 and P328 Data Sheets for information.
Note that if no P325 Remote Dimming Control is used, Input Channel 3 is available to
accept NMEA data from another talker. If multiple NMEA 0183 sentences are to be input
at this Channel they must first be multiplexed.
Note that, if required, Input Channel 3 also contains terminals to provide a 24vDC output
for powering the talker concerned. Maximum current consumption of 500mA is available
on this channel.
Separately input NMEA 0183 data can be carried on a twisted pair cable with overall screen,
16/0.2mm (0.5mm CSA). If 24vDC power is also to be provided by the P1066 interface, from
Input Channel 3, to power the talker concerned, then either a twin twisted pair cable with overall
screen or a twin twisted screened pair cable with overall screen, 16/0.2mm (0.5mm CSA), can be
used.
CABLING continued
If the derived NMEA “MWV” (Theoretical) and NMEA “MWD” sentences are to be transmitted
to another listener, Output Channel 3 is used. A cable having a twisted pair with an overall
screen is required. Note that if the listener concerned requires a 24vDC power supply, this may
also be provided directly from Output Channel 3 provided that the current drawn by the listener
does not exceed 500mA. If utilizing this facility, either two individual cables of the
aforementioned type or a cable with twin twisted pairs (or twin twisted screened pairs), and with
an overall screen, will be required. All cables are to be provided by shipyard and cores of
16/0.2mm (0.5mm CSA) are recommended. Refer to details below for all Output Channel 3
connections.
If using the “Power Fail” alarm facility, a cable having a twisted pair with overall screen;
shipyard supply, is required. Cores of 16/0.2mm (0.5mm CSA) are recommended.
Relays fitted in connected indicator/s are all in parallel with the P1066 RL1 relay when full
system is connected.
An un-interruptible power supply, totally separate from the normal power supply fed to the
P1066 Interface at “24VDC” terminals, must be used for the alarm circuit.
IMPORTANT:
When preparing any o/all screen of cables for clamping to the conductive fabric wrap;
1) Ensure that the position of the exposed screen is sufficient to engage within the
confines of the conductive clamping area when the cable cores are themselves
connected into the appropriate terminals.
2) Also ensure that the exposed screening is clamped fully around 360º, i.e. around the
complete circumference of the cable, to provide fullest possible EMC benefit.
1) A DVM is used to check continuity between the external M6 earth stud and;
2) After bonding, check continuity between ship’s earth and the EMC socket on the
interface.
