1. BRIEF INTRODUCTION
a) Site study of proposed cross-drainage structures (bridges and culverts) under GA Project
Pemathang.
3. OBSERVATIONS
The team made detail assessment of all the cross-drainage structures at the project site. While
the general details of the required cross-drainage structures are presented below, the geometric
details such as sizes, slope etc. can be ascertained only after completion of the detail hydraulic
analysis of each structure and finalization of the road level and slope.
1. Bridge 01:
The proposed bridge falls on Boulevard 02. The valley is about 90 m long and about 6.50 m
high at the deepest point. However, the actual flow is only a small stream which can be
accommodated by a multi-cell box bridge/culvert. The road over remaining part of the valley
could be supported on retaining walls. While the above combination of cross-drainage structure
and retaining wall would fulfill the functional requirement, other option would be to go for a
bridge and that is, if aesthetics is a big consideration.
The consultant shall prepare preliminary design proposals for various possible options and
present to the Gyalsung Project Management for consideration.
2. Bridge 02:
The proposed bridge falls on Boulevard 03. In fact, this bridge is on the same stream as bridge
No. 02 but on upstream side. A RC box frame bridge of span between 6.00 m to 8.00 m is
expected to suffice. The exact span shall be ascertained after detail hydraulic study.
3. Culverts
The culvert type and sizes mentioned above are tentative and subject to change after conclusion
of the detail hydraulic studies and consultations with road design engineer.
4. RECOMMENDATIONS
Geotechnical Studies:
➢ For Bridge No. 01, if the decision is to go for a bridge, at least a geo-physical test (SRT
or ERT) would have to be conducted to obtain the more detailed sub soil properties
specific to the bridge site. However, if the decision is to go for a combination of multi-
cell box bridge/culvert and retaining walls, then the SRT conducted for other locations
within the project site could be used with reasonable accuracy.
➢ For Bridge No. 02, the SRT conducted for other locations can be used to estimate the
subsoil properties for the bridge with a reasonable accuracy. The bottom slab of the
frame is placed at a shallow depth since the bearing capacity requirement is quite low
due to inherent property of the box frame bridge/box culvert to distribute the loads over
a larger area.
➢ No additional geotechnical studies would be required for the pipe culverts and box
culverts owing to their small size and small structural weight.
Structure type
➢ For the cross-drainage structures with lower design discharge, pipe culvert is
recommended over box culvert for ease of construction and cheaper construction cost.
However, irrespective of the design discharge, minimum size of pipe culvert
recommended is 1.20 m to facilitate easier access for cleaning and also to minimize the
risk of clogging due to debris.
