ASSIGNMENT-2

BY:- AKASH PATEL (2019CE10212)

A) SUBJECTIVIST VIEW-

Moral Subjectivity is the ideology that there is nothing such as the Right Choice. There
are no facts, and no moral choice is universally true. Every individual has its own
thoughts, everyone feels differently and hence each & everyone is a judge of morality.
Thus, a society has no role to play in forming moral opinions and it can’t judge
someone’s choices.
Now, as per the definition X will defend his actions by mentioning the above-said points
and say that he did not do anything wrong, morally, and his actions are justified as he
had his own reasons for breaking the queue. Also, this person might condemn the whole
idea of ‘Queues’ as it represents a normative belief of the society and hence is
unacceptable to her/him.
B) RELATIVIST VIEW-
Cultural Relativism says that the moral choices are not absolute rather they are defined
by the society or culture. There is nothing such as Universal truth or Individual choices
as each choice is pre-defined by the society and going against it is considered abnormal.
For example, women showing-off skin is considered normal in Western culture while it
is considered ‘haram’ in Middle-Easten culture.
Thus, X, upon being confronted, would argue how his behavior is considered normal in
the society (given that he isn’t in one with same ideology) he/she belongs to and thus
he/she couldn’t understand why he/she is being called upon. On the other hand, X could
just apologize by saying that it’s normal in his/her culture and hence he/she thought
that it would be same in this case, which was a mistake. Also, in the latter case X mustn't
be blamed entirely because the society he/she comes from do not have a concept of
Queues and it might be difficult to process such a new concept too early.
C) UTILITARIAN VIEW-
Utilitarian Ideology focuses on the end-product rather than the process followed and
hence it stands out from the other two views mentioned earlier. In this ideology, if the
end result is beneficial and produces the most pleasure or happiness for the majority,
then the decision is justified. However, if some actions produce displeasure, then they
are blameworthy.
So, in this case if X was confronted, he would retaliate by pointing out how he/she
reaching the destination earlier would produce happiness and hence it has more utility.
For example, if X is a clerk in the office whose elevator is in the context and his/her
reaching earlier to turn on the lights and ACs would provide pleasure to the majority
people working in that office.
D) My Arguments Against-

a. In my opinion, I feel that subjectivity isn’t the best approach towards morality as
it might justify something heinous too. Although it might be useful in some cases
such as when justifying a poor person stealing food. I would condemn X by
saying that he/she needs to respect every other person standing in the queue as
they are not a bunch of fools to do so and his ideology will ultimately lead to
chaos which marks the downfall of a society. If everyone will try to break the
queue, ultimately there won’t be any queue left and only chaos will be there.
Hence, X’s action isn’t justified.
b. Now, if X says that breaking a queue is normal in his culture, then I would
retaliate by pointing out that such is not the case for everyone else in the queue
and hence he/she is being disrespectful to them. Also, if X says that they aren’t
aware of the norms of this place, then I would fire back by labelling them as
ignorant. Also, in my opinion there are some values which are indeed universal in
nature and necessary for the peaceful existence of the society. Hence relativism
is also not the best view to look towards morality. So, here also X’s action isn’t
justified.
