Word Choice

Goal:
To create vivid pictures in the reader's
mind which bring the story to life
Things to keep in mind:
• Choose words selectively
• Don't write to impress
• Find an original way to say it
• Be concise
Choose Words Selectively
• Try for the most precise word
• Avoid using words like "stuff" and "things"
• Use strong verbs
o Use passive verbs only when necessary
Don't Write to Impress
• Avoid using long, incomprehensible words
• Don't overuse your thesaurus!
• Use everyday language
• Avoid jargon and inflated language when
possible
o These are acceptable when used for effect or in
dialogue
Find an Original Way to Say it
• Use cliches only for effect
• Aim to make phrases stand out without
removing the reader from the story

• Veer away from "said" when possible


Be Concise
• Use adjectives sparingly
• No blocks of descriptions!
• Don't ramble
