Deliverables
1) Project report.
2) Demonstration of working power supply packaged in an aluminum or plastic
box.

Project report

Your report should include:

1) Design calculations for various components and provide justification for each selected
component.
2) Brief discussion about how well your power supply meets the specifications.

Project evaluation milestones

Output: The power supply should have two separate outputs.

Description

The general block diagram of a DC Power Supply is shown below.

Figure 1: Block Diagram of a DC Power Supply (from Sedra/Smith Microelectronic Circuits)

Transformer: Choose iron-core transformer(s) of your own choice according to the voltage
requirements. A centre-tapped transformer or more than one transformer can be used. Note that
transformer isolation must not be breached while designing power supply.

Diode Rectifier: Rectifier can be designed by either using discrete diodes or using rectifier ICs. Give
special attention to the current and PIV ratings of diodes while choosing them.

Hint: You can approximate the peak current through diodes using simulation.

Filter: Use a capacitor as filter.

Hint: It is always a good practice to use a slightly higher capacitance than the calculated one.

Voltage Regulator: Use regulator ICs that are easily available in the market (e.g. LM317 and LM337).
Voltage regulators should be selected keeping in mind the input voltage range, output voltage, dropout
voltage and current rating. The regulators should have thermal shutdown feature as well. Use heat sinks
with the regulators to help dissipate heat more effectively.
