Introducere
În această lecție vom vedea cum se formează și când se folosește Past

Continuous Tense. Past Continuous Tense este timpul trecut continuu –
însuși numele ne spune la ce se folosește. Vom vedea care sunt aceste
tipuri în exemple. Anumite verbe nu au forme continue. Vom vedea
care sunt acestea.
Past Continuous Tense (timpul trecut continuu) se formează de

la verbul TO BE la Past Simple Tense (timpul trecut simplu), adică
was/were și present participle (participiul prezent) al verbului
principal.
Forma afirmativă
Singular Plural
I was working. – Eu lucram. We were working. – Noi lucram.
You were working. – Tu lucrai. You were working. – Voi lucrați.
He was working. – El lucra. They were working. – Ei/Ele
lucrau.
She was working. – Ea lucra.
It was working. – Se lucra.

Forma interogativă
Forma interogativă a verbului la Past Continuous Tense (timpul trecut

continuu) se formează prin inversarea (la fel ca la forma afirmativă)
verbului auxiliar TO BE (la timpul trecut) și a pronumelui personal.
Forma interogativă – Yes/No questions
Singular Plural
Was I working? – Eu lucram? Were we working? – Noi lucram?
Were you working? – Tu lucrai? Were you working? – Voi lucrați?
Was he working? – El lucra? Were they working? – Ei/Ele

La întrebările Yes/No se dau răspunsuri scurte (short answers) astfel:

Was it working? – Yes, it was/No,

it wasn't.

Forma negativă
Forma negativă a lui Past Continuous Tense (timpul trecut continuu) se

formează de la forma negativă a verbului auxiliar TO BE la timpul
trecut și Present Participle (participiul prezent) al verbului
principal.

I was not (I wasn't) working. – We were not (weren't)
Eu nu lucram. working. – Noi nu lucram.
You were not (weren't) You were not (weren't)
working. – Tu nu lucrai. working. – Voi nu lucrați.
He was not (wasn't) working. – They were not (weren't)
El nu lucra. working. – Ei/Ele nu lucrau.
She was not (wasn't) working.

– Ea nu lucra.
It was not (wasn't) working. –

Nu se lucra.

Utilizare
Past Continuous Tense (timpul trecut continuu) se folosește pentru:
Acțiuni care în trecut au durat mai mult timp.
Exemple:

She was reading a book all day yesterday. – Ea a citit ieri cartea
toată ziua ieri.
I was watching TV all night long. – M-au uitat la TV toată noaptea.
The children were doing their homework all afternoon. – Copiii

au făcut teme toată după-masă.
Două acțiuni care s-au desfășurat în trecut în paralel.
Exemple:
While I was watching TV, my sister was doing her homework. –

În timp ce mă uitam la TV, sora mea își făcea tema.
Were you listening while John was explaining the new

company rules? – Ai ascultat când John a explicat noile reguli ale
companiei?
While Monica was speaking to Đorđe, he was watching the

cartoon! – În timp ce Monica vorbea cu George, el se uita la desene
animate.
Acțiuni din trecut care se desfășurau de mai demult, dar care au fost
întrerupte de o altă acțiune tot din trecut. Această a doua acțiune se
exprimă, de obicei, la timpul trecut simplu (Past Simple Tense):
Exemple:

I was watching TV when the telephone rang. – Mă uitam la TV

când a sunat telefonul.
When we arrived they were playing cards. – Când am ajuns, ei

jucau cărți.
Notă: Verbele care nu se folosesc la Present Continuous Tense, nu se

folosesc nici la Past Continuous Tense. De obicei, în locul lor se
folosește un verb la Past Simple Tense.
Verbe care nu se folosesc la Present Continuous

(stative verbs/verbe de stare)
Un număr de verbe de cele mai multe ori nu se pot folosi la timpul

continuu. Cele mai importante sunt:

hear – a auzi
feel – a simți
see – a vedea
taste – a gusta
smell – a mirosi
envy – a invidia
fear – a se speria

dislike – a displăcea
hate – a urî
hope – a spera
like – a plăcea
love – a iubi
mind – a se îngrijora
prefer – a prefera, a-i plăcea mai mult
regret – a regreta
assume – a presupune
believe – a crede
consider – a considera
doubt – a bănui
suppose – a presupune
contain – a conține
cost – a costa
hold – a ține
measure – a măsura, a aprecia
weight – a cântări
forget – a uita

imagine – a imagina
notice – a observa
recognise – a recunoaște
remember – a-și aduce aminte
understand – a înțelege
wish – a dori
want – a vrea
know – a ști
Ele se folosesc la Past Simple Tense în loc de Past Continuous Tense.
Exemple:
I heard a noise in the next room. – Am auzit un zgomot în camera

vecină.
Stop! Didn't you see the red light? – Stai! Nu ai văzut că e roșu?
This cake tasted good. – Această prăjitură a avut un gust bun.
I knew that you didn't understand me. – Știam că nu m-ați înțeles.
Notă pentru teste de avansare: Pentru a asimila materia cât mai

bine, lecția are teste de exersare care ajută la verificarea noțiunilor de
gramatică.
