Overview 2011
Dear friends of Inclusion Europe, Children with intellectual disabilities should live in an environment where their basic needs are provided ensuring at the same time their inclusion in society. We are not asking for privileges, but for rights. National governments and legal bodies should watch over the implementation of measures to make sure they enjoy the same rights than other children. In this sense, the Spains Supreme Court has recently taken positive steps towards the protection of the educational rights of children with intellectual disabilities. Raising awareness on the needs of these children is also the main purpose of the project Childrens rights for all!. Its final conference will be held in October in Brussels. The comparative report that will be released during the conference will look at the particular situation of children with intellectual disabilities in EU member states, but some preliminary findings have already been drafted. Likewise, the call for videos to be screened during the event is still open. More information is available in this newsletter. For further updates, you can consult our e-journal. Best wishes, Information team Inclusion Europe

Creating free-barrier cities

Urban life provides a variety of opportunities and services for citizens. However, physical barriers still prevent many people with disabilities to fully participate in society and enjoy the benefits of living in the city. Therefore, the European Award for Accessible Cities recognizes local governments efforts to create accessible urban spaces and make dayto-day life easier for people with disabilities. A second award will be given to networks of cities or organisations that have been outstanding during 2011 in championing accessibility in the urban environment. Invisible children with intellectual disabilities

Inclusion Europe together with highly qualified national experts has been conducting research focused on the state of implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (hereinafter CRC) from the perspective of children with intellectual disabilities in more than 20 European countries. The research seeks to assess how the States plan and evaluate the progresses in the five selected areas - health, abuse, family and (de)institutionalisation, education, as well as promotion, participation and antidiscrimination. The project does not aim to scale countries, but rather to give an overview of the situation for this group of children. Continue reading

Tell the story of children with intellectual disabilities

Inclusion Europe is launching a call for videos on the occasion of the final conference that will finalise our project Childrens rights for all from 20-21 October 2011 in Brussels. Our intention is to show a selection of short video presentations during the conference focusing on the personal story of a child with intellectual disabilities or analysing specific topics such as access to education, healthcare, de-institutionalisation, support to families and abuse.
