of libraries and librarians
What is evolution?
• "a gradual process in which something changes
into a different and usually more complex or
better form." - AllAboutScience.org
• “a process of change in a certain direction;
especially : a process of constant change from a
lower or simple state to a higher or complex
state. “ - Merriam-Webster
• “ The gradual development of something” –
Oxford Dictionary
 a movement in a circle or
curve around a central
point: The moon makes
one revolution around the
earth in about 29.5 days.
 (Social studies) a sudden
and great change, esp. the
violent change of a system
of government: EDSA
Revolution
 (Technology) a complete
or radical change of any
kind
Cambridge Dictionary (2017)
“If all e-books were
available to everyone at
any time, why would
anyone need to buy a
book ever again?

And why would anyone

need to visit a library if it
could be downloaded
off-site?”

Key Takeaways
Our Future in Times of Change
How values guides our understanding of trends and
Transition
Figueroa (2017)
We need to look at trends and changes with consideration
of our own professional values

PROFESSIONAL PERSONAL VALUES

VALUES • a civic commons,
• confidentiality and
privacy, • democracy,
• diversity, • discovery,
• equitable access, • education and literacy,
• intellectual freedom • public discourse
and expression,
• preservation

And so, looking at changes, we need to ask ourselves what they

might mean for intellectual freedom, for education, for equitable
access, or for any of the other values that drive our work.
VALUES
• technology • TRENDS
• Roles • professional • WORK
• concept • personal CHALLENGES

WORKSHOP
HOW LIBRARIANS CAN STAY
AFLOAT?
WHAT ARE THE PERSONAL
CHARACTERICTICS YOU HAVE TO
REMOVE IN ORDER TO STAY AFLOAT?
WHAT ARE THE SKILLS YOU HAVE TO
DEVELOP IN ORDER TO STAY
AFLOAT?
WORKSHOP
In 3 post it notes, kindly write your answer to
the following questions:
1. As a librarian, what hinders you to stay
afloat in the sea of change?
2. What are the skills you still need to learn?
Conclusion:
“Patrons will judge the service they receive in a library
against comparable retail experiences, whether it’s a
bookstore or Apple store, [. . .] there’s an expectation in
terms of how patrons interact with technology [and
staff]...that they bring with them when they enter the
library. For the library to remain relevant and continue to
engage their users, they have to step up their game.”
