OTC DRUGS

Dispensing Area/Billing Area Waiting Area

a) Layout

The picture above first shows that upon entering the pharmacy you’ll be seeing metal
racks and shelves that contain the over-the-counter drugs. These are drugs that does not
need any prescription for you to buy it. Other drugs are not easily accessible because
they need a cautious handling and requires patients to show their prescription to buy it.
These are displayed in the storage rooms of the pharmacy.
Controlled Drugs

OTC Storage

Logistic
Management

Prescription Drugs

In Mediserv Pharmacy they divided the storage room into 3 specific areas which are the
Controlled Drugs, OTC Storage, and Prescription Drugs.

✓ Controlled Drugs are under the prescription drugs however they are strictly
controlled by the government because of its risk and high potential for abuse and
addiction. Thus, these drugs are separated from the prescription drugs storage.
Controlled substances include opioids, stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens,
and anabolic steroids.
✓ Over-the-counter drugs storage have its stockroom for the staff to easily restock
the drugs that are displayed publicly.
✓ Prescription Drugs are drugs that you need a prescription before you will be able
to buy it. These are separated from the other drugs for the staff not to be confused
and would not waste time in finding the prescription drug that was being bought.
Inside these room, there are refrigerators for the drugs that need to be refrigerated
because not all drugs should be displayed in a room temperature.

Furthermore, the shelves are made of metals because Philippines is a tropical country
where termites attack objects made of wood.

The layout also shows a separate room for logistics activities of the pharmacy, this is
where the ordered stocks would be managed. This is also where hospital orders from this
pharmacy would be handled, as well as deliveries from the online website and telephone
orders.

b) Drug Classification

According to the list of World Health Organization (WHO), there are 6 classifications of
drugs based on their therapeutic action. The display and arrangement of different
medicines are based on the following:

✓ oral drugs
✓ injectable drugs
✓ infusion fluids
✓ vaccines, immunoglobulins and antisera
✓ drugs for external use and antiseptics
✓ disinfectants

Additionally, these drugs are arranged in alphabetical order within each class.
IV. Organizational Logo/ Pharmacy Logo

“Diserv mo ang kalidad na gamot

Diserv mo ang mabilis na serbisyong pangkalusugan”

The logo symbolizes the mortar and pestle which is traditionally used in pharmacies to
crush the specific ingredients for preparing medication based on prescription, it is
commonly known as a symbol of the pharmacist’s trademark. As you can see in the logo,
under the mortar and pestle, there is a hand that symbolizes “ to serve” the patients with
the best care and honesty.
