Hastings Students for Immigrants’ Rights, Spring 2023

Please email your completed application to HSIR@uchastings.edu and copy both Savannah
Carter (savannah.carter@uchastings.edu) and Shilpa Shaju (sshaju99@uchastings.edu) by
Friday, December 30 at 11:59 pm.
During Spring Break of 2023 (March 6-10), UC Hastings students will have the chance to participate
in HSIR's annual Detention Center Delegation. This year we have partnered up once again with the
Florence Project, based in Arizona.
Rapidly changing policies and demographics within detention makes it hard to know months in
advance what work there will be for students to do and how many detained folks will need to be
served in the given week. Therefore, this will be an observational spring break experience with the
potential to participate in some (if not all) of the following:

 Visit adult detention centers and observe our Know Your Rights presentations there
 Observe the telephonic hotline for detained asylum seekers
 Visit the Kino Border Initiative in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico and get a tour from both KBI
humanitarian staff as well as the Florence Project’s Border Action Team to know more
about border policies and our work at the border
 Meet with staff from the Children’s Team and Adult Direct Representation Team and/or the
Social Work Team to understand all their work
 To be determined if we will be able to offer the opportunity to provide consultations with
any detained clients.
We strive to provide our participants with a unique opportunity to enrich their practical lawyering
skills and learn about the conditions within remote detention facilities along the southern border.
Note:
The delegation is currently being planned as an in-person trip, but it is subject to change based on
COVID-19 policies and protocols.
Trip Cost:
The cost of this trip to Arizona will be fully covered by HSIR.
Additional Requirements:
To participate, students may be required to pass a federal background check and should feel
comfortable signing their names on forms that may be submitted to the federal government. In
anticipation of visiting the Kino Border Initiative site in Nogales, students may also need a valid
passport book or card.
Additionally, participants will be asked to enroll in a one-credit seminar class (Spring Break
Practicum) with Professor Boswell. The seminar will be held on a weekly basis, and it will provide
training for participants on applicable immigration law and best practices. The date and time will
be decided by all participants enrolled based on their schedule.
Lasty, we will require all participants to be fully vaccinated and have received a booster prior to the
trip.
We encourage all students to apply.
