Batik

According to the Cambridge dictionary, batik is a method of printing patterns

on cloth in which wax is applied to the material before it is dyed, or cloth that has
been printed in this manner. Batik, on the other hand, is an art form in which one's
idea is translated into a piece of fabric.

Despite the fact that there are hundreds of different batik designs, certain
ones have long been associated with specific religious events and festivals.
Previously, it was thought that some fabrics might ward off bad luck while others
may bring good fortune.

Certain batik designs are only available to brides, grooms, and their families.
Other designs are only for the Sultan, his family, and their entourage. The pattern of
the batik a person wore may reveal his or her rank.

6 CO_Q1_Arts8_Module3
There are two categories of batik designs:

1. Geometric motifs – this is a fun trend

that emphasizes the simplicity of
combining particular shapes, lines, and
curves for unique effects.

2. Free form designs – the linear treatment

of foliage, flowers, and birds is used in
modern Batik patterns. The design is
dependent on the designer and the
guidelines they employ because the
patterns are free-form.

There are two primary types of batik manufactured there:

1. Hand painted refers to the process of

drawing designs on fabric with hot
molten wax and a metal tool known as a
CANTING. Artists use brushes to paint
the colors within the wax outlines when
the wax outlines are completed.
Brushes can be used to create shaded
and multi-colored graphics.

2. Block printed is the process of joining
metal strips to make a metal block. To
produce a pattern, the metal block is
dipped in molten wax and rubbed on the
fabric.

Brunei batik employs a variety of methods, including airbrushing, cracking,

bubble, rainbow, sprinkling, geometric, and marble. Fabrics such as cotton, chiffon,
linen, and brocade are used in these techniques.

Hand-made batik designs are created by layering and combining colors with
creativity.

Batik can be done in four different ways:

1. hand-drawn
2. using metal blocks
3. screen printing
4. digital printing

Merlion of Singapore

According to popular belief, a Malay

prince saw a lion on his first visit to the now-
sovereign island and decided to create a new
settlement. The name of the country pays
homage to such origins: "Singapura" derives
from Sanskrit, specifically the words "Singa" for
"lion" and "Pura" for "city" – which also explains
Singapore's nickname as the "Lion City."

8 CO_Q1_Arts8_Module3
Aside from that, the lion's head represents bravery and power, while the
chimeric aspect represents the desire to take risks, all of which are highly prized
among Singaporeans. The Mer- portion of the sign, which is a direct allusion to the
sea, refers to the statue's lower body: the fish. It traces back to Singapore's humble
beginnings as a fishing hamlet and a seaport, when the city was still known as
"Temasek," which means "sea town" in Javanese, according to experts.

Wayang Kulit Puppet

Indonesia shadow puppets are known

as Wayang Kulit. Wayang is the Indonesian
word for puppet, and kulit is the Indonesian
word for leather. The puppets made of animal
skin are flat and seen from the side. The head,
legs, and feet are all facing in the same
direction, but the upper body is twisted such
that both shoulders are visible, and the arms
are extremely long.

The puppets are decorated with

headdresses, jewelry, and facial
characteristics. Source: Wayang Kulit, Shadow Puppers, Indonesia

The Puppet Show

A shadow puppet show takes place on a white screen. The puppeteer moves
the puppets between the light and screen, casting a shadow where they block the
light, with an oil lamp or electric light shone behind the screen. The primary rod from
the puppet’s body is inserted into a banana log by the puppet master or the “dalang.”
He can the manipulate the puppets with two hands free. The arms of the puppet are
raised. The dalang delivers the story, interprets it, and gives each character a voice,
creating sound effects with speech and movement.

Sky Lantern

Rice paper is used to make

Flying Lanterns, which have a bamboo
frame and a fuel cell or little candle
inside. The flame from the fuel cell
heats the air inside the lantern,
causing the lantern to rise. The sky
lantern will inflate after it is airborne as
long as the fuel cell or candle remains
lit. The sky lantern floats back to the
ground when the candle goes out.

Source: Sky Lantern via Google

Re illustrated by: Stephany Bryan D. Itao

Throughout the year in Thailand, floating lanterns are utilized for festivals,
the most popular of which is the Loy Krathong Festival. This event takes place on
the night of the 12th full moon, generally in November, with Chang Mai's celebrations
being the brightest and most magnificent. Sky lanterns, also known as wish lanterns,
have become increasingly popular on Phuket's principal tourist beaches. Locals sell
wish lanterns for a small fee on most nights if you stroll down to the beach. Light
your candle, make your wish, and sit back and relax after your wish lantern has
risen into the sky.

Songkok

Men's headgear in Brunei

Darussalam is divided into three
categories:

1. dastar - which is a headband

made of a piece of cloth.
2. songkok - also known as kopiah,
is a velvet cap.
3. tangkolok or serban - a headpiece Source: Songkok via jackcosglori.wordpress.com

popular in the Middle East.

After a while, wearing songkok became a tradition and was associated with
being a Malay. On most formal occasions, it slowly replaced the dastar as part of
Malay national attire. The importance of songkok-wearing is instilled in children at
a young age, both at home and at school. Although an adult may not wish to wear
the songkok all of the time, he will undoubtedly do so on special occasions.

In Cambodia, sandstone carving has a long history. Khmer stone carvers were
regarded as the best in the world from the 9th to the 13th centuries. The oldest stone
carving discovered in Funan, China's centralized state located along the Mekong
Delta, dated from the 6th century (the pre-Angkorian era). During 7th-8th centuries,
the quantity of carvings increased.

For many Cambodian sculptors, stone carving is both a hobby and a source
of income.

What’s More

The Pacific War Memorial

The Pacific War Memorial, which stands at the highest point on Corregidor's
Topside, was created by the US government to memorialize Filipino and American
soldiers who served in World War II. It cost three million dollars to build and was
finished in 1968. A rotunda with a circular altar situated beneath the dome's oculus,
through which light falls on the altar during daylight hours, is the main memorial
structure. On May 5, at exactly 12 p.m., light falls squarely on the altar,
commemorating the surrender of the men stationed there and their heroism during
72 days of bombing. The Eternal Flame of Freedom, a 40-foot (12-meter) Corten steel
structure commissioned by Aristides Demetrios and symbolizes freedom, is located
behind the Memorial.

Cine Corregidor, the island's movie theater, and a tiny park behind the flame
memorial, which provides a wonderful view of the island's tail end, are also part of
the complex.
