PENSKY MARTIN`S FLASH AND FIRE POINT APPARATUS

AIM:
To determine the flash and fire points of the given oil using pensky martin`s Closed up
apparatus

DESCRIPTION:
The instrument consists of an oil up with a filling mark scribed round the interior.The cup
is provided with a lid to close it, which carries a thermometer holder there are three ports in the
lid and a revolving shutter which is also perforated with three ports identical with corresponding
port on the lid. The shutter is operated by turning a vertical sprig loaded spindle, provided with a
mild head. The shutter works between the stops in such a way that parts are completely opened
and completely shut for the two extreme position. The cup is held in place on a wire gauge and
heated by means of an electric heated housed inside the metallic holder.

PROCEDURE:
*The cup is cleaned and the given oil is filled up to the filling mark.

*The thermometer is inserted in the holder provided in such a way that the bulb immersed
in the oil without touching the metallic surface.

*The oil is heated by means of surface electric heater so that the oil gives out of vapours.

*The shutter is rotated to open the ports and a glowing splinter stick is applied.

*The temperature at which a distinct flash is visible is noted as flash point.

*The heating is continued further and the temperature at which the oil vapour ignites and
continuous to burn for atleast 5 sec is noted as fire point.

*The readings are tabulated.
