Justice Black’s opinion relies on the principle of the Sixth Amendment of the
Constitution.
2. In this case, Gideon was denied a judge, which is a clear violation of the Sixth
Amendment of the Constitution. However, in addition to the violation of the Sixth
Amendment, which has not been incorporated, the Fourteenth Amendment was violated,
since the amendment guarantees equal protection amongst all citizens. Though the
Sixth Amendment has not been incorporated, the 14th Amendment was, therefore
resulting in the ruling.
3. This case prevents any corruption at the state level by ensuring a fair trial for the
individual, and also promotes individual liberties in doing so.
