MEHB413 – Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning

Question on Heating and Cooling Loads Calculation

Assemble the following data to calculate the SHR for the room at 12:00, 14:00, and 16:00:
One-floor office data:
Floor area = 10 m × 10 m, Height = 5 m.
The joint between the walls and the sill is uncaulked, and the joint between walls and
roof is not tapered or plastered and has no vapour barrier. The wall is made of wood.
Curtain wall construction type F on south, east and west side only, with U = 0.58
W/m2·K.
A flat roof of type 2 with U = 0.78 W/m2·K, without suspended ceiling.
A 4-m2 non-weather-stripped double door with non-caulking frame is installed on the
south side with the overall heat transfer coefficient and CLTD value to be same as
those of the south wall.
Windows on east and west side only, with area 10 m2 each.
The windows are of single-slider type, not weather-stripped. The window frames on
the walls are uncaulked.
For the windows, the shading coefficient (SC) is 0.85 while the maximum Solar Heat
Gain Factor (SHGFmax) is 800 W/m2. The U value is 3.2 W/m2·K. There is no
carpeting, and the room weight is assumed ‘light’.
Lights switched on at 08:00 and switched off at 18:00. The lights have an average
density of 28 W/m2 of floor area and their ‘A’ coefficient is 55 while the ‘B’
classification is A.
The average outside dry-bulb temperature is 35°C and wet-bulb temperature is 25°C
with the assumption of these values are constant; the average inside dry-bulb
temperature is 22°C and relative humidity of 60%.
The building has no obstruction or shielding around it. The average air velocity
around the building is 5 m/s.
There are 8 occupants in the building from 8:00 to 18:00, each emit 150 W of sensible
heat and 40 W of latent heat.
Assume no heat transfer occurs across other surfaces and no other sources of sensible
or latent heat.

Which of the three cooling loads computed should be considered for the air-conditioning
system design and equipment selection? Why?
