Can we put a price tag on human life?

"Human life should not be sold; it tramples on the morality of humanity and also affects the economy of
our country." In the world of medicine, the process called "organ transplant" is an important solution
that has helped thousands of lives. Its legal foundation is underpinned by the Organ Donation Act of
1991, which gives a person or their family members a decision on whether they want to share their body
when they pass away. But according to the Philippine Renal Disease Registry (2015), even with the
development of the said law, the percentage of donations in the Philippines is still low, which also
causes the continuous growth of the number of people who need organ transplants. This issue is one of
the reasons why the discussion about legalizing the sale of organs has been opened.

If we look at the concept of our economy, we can say that it has a greater impact on the poor. This is
one of the reasons why I am against the legislation of organs-for-sale; just because of the lack of health
benefits in the country, it is not easy to get enough money ready immediately when we are faced with
illness. The poor rely only on organ donation; in this process, it is not necessary to spend a lot of money
to get a needed organ. Looking at the other side, one of the arguments against it is that it will benefit
the poor. Let's say the organ donor is poor; his family will be helped if they receive money in exchange
for his body. It is true that the money that the said donor gets will help, but how can we say that the
transaction that the poor will get is fair?

In this issue, we must look at each side of the situation. We should not only think about the circulation
of money in the country; we should also pay attention to the people who need it the most. The
presented arguments, evidence, and examples are the reasons why the legalization of organs-for-sale
will have a negative impact on the whole country. We deserve to open up all opportunities to an equal
state of being. All people have the right to adequate health benefits; the poor should not be burdened
by putting a price on one's life.
