Introduction

All over the world buildings built before earthquake-resistant design procedure are developed , suffer from
inability to supply adequate ductility during earthquake.

Retrofitting of column in these type of structures by different procedures like steel jacket may supply
transverse reinforcement and enhance seismic performance by providing additional ductility.

In this study we will check seismic behavior of buildings before and after retrofitting its columns is checked
using software.
LITERATURE REVIEW

1. Pushover Analysis of Retrofitted Reinforced Concrete Buildings

(Hamidreza Nahavandi Portland State University)

● The research shows how we can make old buildings resistant against earthquake.
● It deals step by step analysis process including evaluation of existing building, retrofitting the structure
and cost estimation.
● It include purpose of Pushover analysis along with its background, lateral load patterns and target
displacements.
2. Study the effect of Pushover analysis of G+15 STORY R.C.C. Structure using SAP2000 (Navanath Vitthal
Ingale, L.G. Kalurkar)

● Non-Linear Static Analysis using the simple inelastic approach which differs from a traditional
approach.
● Methods of pushover analysis including load control and displacement control methods.
● Involvement of Zipper Bracing frame.
OBJECTIVES

● To improve the ductility characteristics of the structure.

● To provide insight into structural aspects that control performance
during severe earthquakes.
● To estimate the cost of various retrofitting techniques.
● To compare resilience against earthquake before and after
retrofitting.
RESEARCH GAP

● Long ago civil engineers focused mainly on conventional

seismic analysis rather than pushover analysis.
● But in recent times there has been a lot of development
in the pushover analysis as it deals with the inelastic
analysis of structure.
METHODOLOGY

● We are mainly dealing with the software SAP2000 to compare resilience to earthquake before and
after retrofitting.
● In SAP2000 non -linear behaviour is assumed to occur within frame elements concentrated at plastic
hinges.
● We will chose a particular class of soil, and Ss( Spectral Acceleration Parameter at short period) and
S1(for period of 1 sec) values.
● We will take the measurement of columns, calculate the no of columns and select the natural
frequency of the first mode.

DISCUSSION
Steel Jacketing

Confining reinforced concrete column in steel jackets is one

of the effective methods to improve the earthquake resistant
capacity.

Using this process having a vast amount of transverse steel

which provides more confinement to the compressed
concrete.

It also prevents concrete from crumbling out of plane which

could be considered as critical reason for deterioration of
rebars and buckling of longitudinal bars in a column.
CFRP Retrofit Technique

It is wrapping the concrete member with carbon

fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP).

CFRP lightweight enables installation duration to be

accomplished quickly with less labor expenses and
service disruption of the building.

This material also shows resistance to corrosion in

chloride environments which can possibly leads to
reduction in maintenance cost.
FUTURE GOALS

● To understand the working of SAP2000.

● To take a practical example of building(such as Academic
Complex) and take the desired data(No of columns,
Dimensions of columns, Steel Jacketing required) and then
compare this with original structure on SAP2000.
● To make a theoretical cost estimation on various retrofitting
technique.
