FUNCTIONS OF ELECTRONIC CONTROL SYSTEM

Drawer/Door Switch Operation

Opening the door or drawer closes the switch, completing a circuit to the control board. If the unit is on and not in Sabbath mode, the
control board:
• Enables appropriate lights and internal dispenser operation.
• Disables the evaporator fan, ice maker, and air purification fan.
• Controls the door ajar alarm by monitoring the closed door switch.
If the unit is in Sabbath mode, the control board:
• Reduces lights to 30% illumination regardless of the door switch position.
• Does not disable the evaporator fan or air purification system when the door or drawer opens.

IW-30CI
Controls and Operation service.subzero.com
Evaporator Fan Operation (continued)

Evaporator Fan Operation

Evaporator fans are brushless direct current (BLDC) motors. When the unit is on, the evaporator fan is supplied with 12 VDC. The control
board sets the fan speed based on the software requirements.
EVAPORATOR FAN ACTIONS
Control Board Detects Action
High offset temperature (above cut-in temperature) • Control board sends high-speed signal to evaporator fan.

Compartment temperature between cut-in and high offset • Evaporator fan starts on medium.
temperature
• Control board sends zero speed command to evaporator fan.
Compartment cutout temperature • Evaporator fan stops.

• Closing a glass door turns on the evaporator fan at the

programmed speed for 5 minutes.
• The glass door defrost stops when cooling starts.
Glass door defrost • Opening and closing the door during glass door defrost resets
the time to 5 minutes.
• In Sabbath mode, the system disables glass door defrost.

• Door/drawer switch closes.

Open door/drawer when evaporator fan is running • Control board sends zero speed command to evaporator fan.
• Evaporator fan stops.

• Door/drawer switch closes.

Open door/drawer when unit is in Sabbath mode • Control board does not change fan speed.

Freezer evaporator fan:

• Runs 100% of the time.
Max Ice feature on • Runs at high speed when freezer compressor is on.
• Runs at low speed when compressor is off.

Humidity Assist Mode

The Humidity Assist mode is currently only operational in Wine Storage units. In Wine Storage units, the Humidity Assist mode increases
the humidity in the wine zones. After the compressor cuts out, the evaporator fan continues to run at medium speed.
• The evaporator fan runs at medium speed until the zone thermistor reaches the setpoint plus the humidity assist temperature offset.
• Or, the evaporator fan runs at medium speed until the humidity assist maximum time expires. Which ever occurs first.

Refrigerator Defrost Assist

Defrost Assist improves cooling performance and prevents frozen evaporators. Refrigerator Defrost Assist is based on the setpoint, the
cabinet temperature, the programmed offset, and the cooling priority.
• When the zone cabinet temperature reaches the programmed temperature, it enters Refrigerator Defrost Assist.
• The software can bypass Refrigerator Defrost Assist.
• The evaporator fan turns on at low speed.
• Refrigerator Defrost Assist continues until the evaporator thermistor temperature reaches the programmed temperature or the
Refrigerator Defrost Assist maximum time has elapsed.
• If the zone cabinet temperature drops below the programmed temperature, the zone exits Refrigerator Defrost Assist and returns to
idle.
• If the refrigerator zone cabinet thermistor has had a fault, the zone enters Refrigerator Defrost Assist.

Freezer Adaptive Defrost (continued)

Freezer Adaptive Defrost

There are three stages of adaptive defrost: Defrost Melt, Defrost Dwell, and Defrost Post Dwell. The control board monitors the length of
time the zone between Defrost Melt and Defrost Dwell to determine when the next defrost occurs.
FREEZER ADAPTIVE DEFROST
Stage Process
During the stages of defrost:
• The zone temperature display is locked out.
• The defrost terminator is checked (defrost feedback circuit)
General all stages during the beginning of Defrost Melt. It is not used for adaptive
defrost.
• The defrost terminator is retained as a safety measure to stop
an uncontrolled defrost heater.

The zone enters Defrost Melt when one of the following conditions
is met:
• The maximum run time has occurred.
• The time since the last defrost is greater than or equal to the
programmed time.
• The cabinet thermistor reading is less than or equal to the
Defrost Melt programmed temperature. For this condition, the time since
the last defrost must be greater than or equal to the
programmed time.
The zone stays in Defrost Melt until:
• The evaporator thermistor temperature is greater than the
programmed temperature.
• Or, defrost maximum time has elapsed.

In Defrost Dwell, the defrost heater is off, the evaporator fan is off,
and the drain trough heater is on. This allows the water to drain
Defrost Dwell properly from the evaporator.
• The zone stays in Defrost Dwell until the Defrost Dwell
maximum time has elapsed.

In Defrost Post Dwell, the defrost heater is off, the evaporator fan
is off, and the compressor is running. This freezes the evaporator.
The zone stays in Defrost Post Dwell until:
Defrost Post Dwell • The evaporator thermistor temperature is less than or equal to
the programmed evaporator temperature.
• Or, if the evaporator thermistor is faulted, 15 minutes have
elapsed.

Excessive Compressor Run

The software defines the amount of time that a zone can cool before it classifies as excessive run. Each excessive run time is counted.
When the number of excessive run cycles set by the software occurs, a cooling error code is generated.
When a zone has excessive run, the following occur. If the zone does not have a certain function, the software proceeds to the next item:
• The zone enters idle or defrost.
• The refrigeration valve path is reset.
• The baffle is reset.
• The idle or defrost mode continues as normal, until cooling begins.
• The excessive run counter advances by one.

7041769 REVA 14
IW-30CI
Controls and Operation service.subzero.com
EXCESSIVE COMPRESSOR RUN (continued)

This cycle repeats until:

• The excessive run counter reaches the programmed limit. This generates a cooling error code.
• Or, the zone cools correctly, and the excessive run counter is reset.
