ABSTRACT

In this project Digital Control of DC Motor Using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) has been performed. This report is prepared to provide good operating explanation of a system using microcontroller to vary DC motor speed, its general uses in todays high tech era and to impart knowledge of power machines, microcontroller and materials using these devices.

The advantage of using Pulse Width Modulation is that it offers a soft start capability, which gradually ramps up the motor to operating speed. This reduces mechanical and electrical stress on the motor system and can reduce maintenance and repair costs and extend motor life. The system uses microcontroller which sends signals at intervals by means of PWM to drive the circuit, which drives the motor.

After sufficient testing, it is found that the performance of the Driver module of the system is 95% close to the required specification and the accuracy of the Encoder module in the system varies by an average of 67 revolutions per minute (RPM).

Practical design and analysis are included in the report using the device parameters derived from manufactured datasheets. Instead of rigorous analysis methods, practical approximations are employed whenever possible.
