Slide 1: hello everyone, my name is Oanh. Today, we will discover the new topic which is about
the extinction in operant conditioning.
Slide 2: First, what is extinction? Extinction related to the disappearance of a previously learned
behavior when it is not reinforced. Extinction can occur in all types of behavioral conditioning,
but the term is most often associated with its occurrence and operant conditioning.
Slide 3: Operant conditioning refers to behavior is reinforced by either gaining something
positive or having something negative taken away when the behavior occurs
Slide 4: These terms were discovered by BF Skinner. His first extension curve showed up by
accident a rat was pressing the lever in an experiment on satiation when the pellet dispenser
jammed. Skinner was not there at the time and when he returned, he found a curve in the
results. The rat had gone on pressing although no pellets were received. This demonstrates that
the extinction burst which can occur in the process of extinction and is a temporary increase in
the frequency duration or the magnitude of the condition behavior during the extinction
process. The extinct behavior repeats more to bring back the unconditioned stimulus which in
this case was the pellets.
Slide 5: To understand more, let begin with this specific example. Imagine you work as a clerk at
a local grocery store, a mother and her young son come in the store regularly. The child always
screams when he is checking out until the mother agrees to buy the child some candy
Slide 6: This happens regularly, the child will stop screaming when receiving candy. Then one
day, you notice the mother refuses to buy and the child becomes increasingly upset.
Slide 7: A few weeks later, you see the child does not scream for candy. This means that the
reinforcement was the child receiving candy. Since the child received candy when he screamed
for it as he was leaving the store, he learned that screaming would provide him with candy.
When the mother stopped buying it, the reinforcement was removed. After a while, the child
stopped the behavior and no longer screamed during checkout, extinction was demonstrated
when the behavior screaming discontinued. So that’s how extinction in operant conditioning
occurs. And that’s the end of my presentation.
