About TANUVAS
Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences
University (TANUVAS), the first Veterinary and
Animal Sciences University in South Asia was
established in the year 1989. As per the current
Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR)

Centre for Animal Health Studies (CAHS),
TANUVAS caters to the health and welfare of animals
to uplift the economic status of our farmers. The
Directorate monitors diagnosis /prevention / control
/ elimination / eradication of animal diseases in the
State. CAHS, TANUVAS consists of 13 units/centers

was established in the year 1983 for conducting
research and development of vaccines and
diagnostics for important emerging viral diseases
affecting livestock and poultry. The major objective
of this unit is to develop cost effective veterinary
viral vaccines and field level diagnostic kits for
emerging and re-emerging viral disease of livestock
and poultry. The Unit has commercialized four
veterinary vaccines viz., Bluetongue multivalent
vaccine for sheep to Indian Immunologicals Pvt.,
Ltd., Hyderabad and Biovet Pvt., Ltd., Hyderabad
in the year 2011, Sanvita Biotechnologies Pvt. Ltd.,
Brilliant Bio Pharma Pvt ., Ltd., and Reliance Life
Sciences Pvt.LtD., in the year 2012, 2017 and 2022
respectively. For the benefit of swine industry, the
following vaccines, inactivated classical swine fever
vaccine, live attenuated classical swine fever vaccine
and inactivated porcine circovirus 2 vaccine were
developed and commercialized in the year 2021 to
Biovet Pvt ., Ltd., Hyderabad.Currently, vaccines and
diagnostics are being developed for the emerging
viral diseases such as Lumpy skin disease (LSD) of
cattle, Contagious ecthyma and sheep pox etc.,
Training Programme
The training programme on “Strategies for
Development of Molecular Diagnostics and Cell
Culture Based Vaccines” has been organized for
the benefit of researchers, staff and Post graduate
students of various institutions involved in
development of rapid diagnostics and vaccines.
The five days training programme would feature
lectures and hands on training on advanced
diagnostic techniques viz., immunodiagnostic
penside assays (ELISA, latex agglutination and
lateral flow assays),virus adaptation in cell lines for
vaccine development, strategies for development
of inactivated vaccines – virus inactivation, vaccine
blending and formulation and validation of vaccines
and diagnostics

• Genome and proteome based diagnostic assays
• Recombinant protein based immunodiagnostic
assays, ELISA’s
• Penside diagnostic assays – Latex agglutination
and lateral flow tests
• Maintenance of cell lines,virus infection in cell
lines, confirmation of virus infection in cell lines
• Preparation of inactivated vaccines: virus
inactivation, vaccine blending and formulation
• Validation of diagnostics and vaccines
