In the video that was tweeted
by BJP leaders, Rahul purport-
edly asks, “So, Jesus Christ is a
form of God. Is that correct?”
Priest Ponnaiah responds:
“He’s a real God. God reveals
him as a man, a human person,
not like Shakti or this power.”
The Congress attacked the
BJP saying it was spreading
mischief. It alleging that the

AFTER eight years, amid
strong opposition, a new power
tariff has come into effect in
the State as the Tamil Nadu
Electricity Regulatory Com-
mission (TNERC) has accepted
the Tangedco’s tariff hike pro-
posal on Saturday.
The commission has also ap-
proved the proposal to increase
tariff by 6% every year from
July 1 2023-24 till 2026-27 based
on inflation for all type of pow-
er consumers in the State.
According to the new tariff,
`4.50 will be charged per unit
(up to 400 units) without sub-
sidy for domestic consumers.
The 100-unit free power for all
domestic consumers, however,
will continue.
Free power for huts, farmers,
powerlooms and handlooms
will also continue, a press re-
lease issued by the State power
utility said.
A separate tariff of LT tariff-
1D (`8 per unit) has been intro-
duced for common lighting, lift,
water supply, and garden in
residential complexes. The

ture Society of Tiruppur, he
has held over 324 awareness
classes in schools in the city
over the years. The switching
between work and passion has
meant Ravindran is busy as a

patti in Tiruppur, he says. “The
children were excited and even

State government to declare
the pond a bird sanctuary on

es, Rajendran (50) of Ar-
iyalur was working as an
agent for a private insur-

claimed to be an employ-
ee of a private company
in Bengaluru. The person

Information Management and
Monitoring System—exclusive-

The new website was created
by the Tamil Nadu e-Govern-
ance Agency after miscreants

cial information regarding the
status of children in the State
as well as details of Juvenile
Justice Boards, Child Welfare
Committees, child care institu-
tions, details of missing chil-
dren and success stories of
adoption among others. How-
ever, the new website only has
laws related to children and
registration of child care insti-
tutions online, while other de-
tails of yet to be updated.
Speaking at the event, Geetha
Jeevan said the new website
will ensure timely approval of
childcare institutions and ef-
fective implementation of
childcare provisions apart from
ensuring less paperwork for
the officials.
All the details in the previous
website will be made available
on the website soon, the official

A team of volunteers from IIT Madras
submitted their report on the ways to re-
duce accidents on the Tiruchy-Chennai
highway passing through Villupuram, to
the district police on Saturday. In a meet-
ing with Villupuram SP N Shreenatha and
other police personnel, the volunteers,
who were researching on frequent acci-
dents on the Ongur -Madapattu stretch on
the highway, came up with three major
reasons.
“Rash driving, parking of vehicles on
roadside for resting, and drunk driving
were the reasons for the accidents,” said
a police official. The team suggested plac-
ing warning signs at accident prone areas,
and also in places where the width of the
road narrows due to overhead bridges.
The source added that it was decided to
form a WhatsApp group of personnel on
patrol duty from Chengalpattu to Trichy
to send alerts on speeding vehicles.

ARCHEOLOGISTS and his
colleagues at the Archeologi-
cal Survey of India (ASI) re-
membered veteran archeolo-
gist professor Braj Bansi Lal,
who passed away on Saturday
at the age of 101, as a ‘great
personality’ and ‘passionate
excavator’. Among his sev-
eral path-breaking findings
are related to excavations
conducted at Mahabharata
site in Hastinapur (Uttar
Pradesh) and Kalibangan be-
longing to Indus Valley civili-
sation in Rajasthan.
In 1976-77, Prof Lal claimed
to have discovered columns
of Hindu temple at Ram jan-
ambhoomi-Babri Masjid site
in Ayodhya. He served as the
director general of the ASI
from 1968 to 1972. He was con-
ferred Padma Bhushan in
2000 and India’s second high-
est civilian award, Padma
Vibhushan in 2021. “Pof Lal
was a great personality, ar-
cheologist and a passionate
excavator. He would say an ar-
cheologist is a pathologist.
Excavation is like a postmor-
tem, which ascertains the
cause of death. Similarly
through excavation, you have
to tell what it is,” said KK Mu-
hammed, former Regional Di-
rector of the ASI.
Muhammed was part of
Lal’s team who carried out ar-
cheological digging in the pe-
riphery of Babri Masjid,
which was demolished in
1992. Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi paid rich tributes to
Lal, saying that he would be
remembered as a great intel-
lectual who “deepened our
connect with our rich past”.

dia and abroad. He authored
books The Earliest Civiliza-
tion of South Asia (1997); In-
dia 1947-1997: New Light on
the Indus Civilization (1998).
In 1994 Prof Lal was awarded
D. Litt (Honoris causa) by the
Institute of Archaeology, St.
Petersburg, Russia. He has
been the Chairman and mem-
ber of several committees of
UNESCO,” the portal states.

(SPQEM) for four years from

mapping and monitoring wa-
ter quality, and waste dumps
in the river channel and to
generate flood hazard poten-
tial zones on the entire Ganga
Basin. A proposal to develop a
geo-portal of the entire Ganga
basin by the Indian Institute
of Remote Sensing, Dehradun
(IIRS) was considered during
the latest meeting of the Ex-
ecutive Committee of the Na-
tional Mission for Clean Gan-
ga (NMCG) at a proposed cost
of `5.4 crore.
The research proposal was
conceptualized on the basis of
the use of space inputs in the
monitoring of the Ganga Riv-
er & special emphasis was on
the development of tools &
dashboards that can be used
by field-level volunteers asso-
ciated with NMCG.
The main objectives of this
project are to develop a geo-
portal of the entire Ganga ba-
sin for visualization and anal-
ysis of hydro-meteorological
and other thematic parame-

IT is not for the first time that
K K Shailaja is hitting na-
tional headlines. If she is
now in news for declining the
prestigious Ramon Magsay-
say award, she was in news
earlier when she was hailed
as the “Corona virus Slayer”
even by international media
org anisations like The
Guardian.
While the rest of the world
was yet to take serious note
of the the onset of a soon-to-
rage pandemic that would
subsequently cause the death
of more than 6.5 million
across the globe, a tiny state
on India’s southern tip was
already combat-ready to fight
the virus. There was an alert
woman behind this — K K
Shailaja, the then Health
Minister of Kerala.
The reports from Wuhan
about the new virus which
was spreading like wildfire
had caught the attention of
Shailaja, who had just then
successfully contained the
spread of the deadly Nipah
virus outbreak. The moment
she read the news from Chi-
na, she alerted her team to
get ready. So when Kerala re-
ported the first ever case of
covid in the country, the
health department in the
state was well prepared.
Shailaja put in place an effec-
tive contingency plan. It was
her foresight that led to Ker-
ala addressing the first phase
of the pandemic effectively.
Her ability to communi-
cate with the public so as to
not let panic set in, while si-
multaneously ensuring effec-
tive contain-
m e n t ,
garnered glo-
bal attention,
with a slew of
global media
including the BBC praising
the Kerala model. She was
even honoured by the United
Nations for her efforts in ad-
dressing the pandemic.

tered politics through SFI

in the CPM and is now a cen-
tral committee member. A
fourth time MLA, she is also
a central committee member
of the All India Democratic
Women’s Association. How-
ever, it was the Nipah and

out the real leader in her. Her
popularity increased mani-
fold thereafter. In the 2021
polls, she won from Mattan-
nur constituency, a CPM bas-
tion, with a margin of 60,963
votes, the largest electoral
margin ever in the state as-
sembly history.

inent section within the Left
and the general society
termed it sheer hypocrisy
and a signifi-
cant blunder,
as a recogni-
tion on the
scale of a Mag-
saysay award
could have well been a much
needed boost for the Left
movement in the country. No
wonder, the rejection of the
prestigious award has kicked
up quite a row. While some
insist that CPM would have
gladly lapped up the recogni-
tion had it been bestowed on
the CM or the Kerala govern-
ment, some even sees CM Pi-
narayi Vijayan’s jealousy to-
wards a better performer
behind the party decision to
reject the award. There are
even a few who predict that
Shailaja is on her way out of
the party given the jealousy
quotient of the party top
brass. But party insiders
pooh-pooh these allegations
and insist that the CPM sees
her as a trump card for win-
ning the next Assembly elec-
tions. The 65-year old Kan-
nur leader could well be
Kerala CPM’s face, in the
post-Pinarayi era.

AS many as 11 people died after
consuming spurious liquor in
adjacent villages of Haridwar
in Uttarakhand on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the news of the
deaths has shook up the state
government.
It is suspected that ahead of the
panchayat polls, some candi-
dates distributed liquor to woo
voters in Haridwar district.
The administration has con-
firmed four deaths so far, while
the death toll could rise as some
other serious victims are still
hospitalised, struggling for life.
The incident was reported in
the Phulgarh and Shivgarh vil-
lages. According to the infor-
mation received, the confirmed
victims have been identified as
Raju, Amarpal and Bhola – all
residents of Phulgarh village.
Later, a fourth person, Manoj,
of the same village also died af-
ter consuming liquor under the
same circumstances.

summer this year has scorched
thousands of acres of farm-
lands and displaced hundreds.

Flood distress
While climate scientists are

ester business of Shubhalak-
shmi Polyesters Limited (SPL)
and Shubhlaxmi Polytex Lim-
ited (SPTex) for `1,592 crore
(`1,522 crore for SPL and `70
crore for SPTex), Reliance In-
dustries said in an exchange
filing late on Friday.
The acquisitions are sub-
ject to approval of the Compe-
tition Commission of India
(CCI) and the respective lend-
ers of SPL and SPTex.
Mumbai-based SPL has a
continuous polymerisation
capacity of 2,52,000 MT per
annum and manufactures pol-
yester fibre, yarns and textile
grade chips through direct po-
lymerisation route, as well as
extruder spinning with value
addition through texturising.
It has two manufacturing fa-
cilities situated at Dahej (Gu-
jarat) and Silvassa (Dadra and
Nagar Haveli).
SPTex has a texturised yarn
manufacturing facility at
Dahej. The acquisitions are
part of the company’s strate-
gy to expand its downstream
polyester business. The above
transactions don’t fall within
the related party transactions
and none of the company’s

change for India before T20 WC

EVEN though India have re-
turned back empty-handed from
the Asia Cup in the UAE, the
team management and the se-
lectors are unlikely to deviate
from the plan and make big
changes in the T20 World Cup
bound squad. The cut-off date to
announce the squad is Septem-
ber 15 and as of now there is no
official word as to when the se-
lectors will assemble, but it is
understood that in all likelihood
the meeting could take place in
Mumbai on Wednesday.
While the Asia Cup was in
many ways a big reality check,
the team management and se-
lectors were also wary of other
aspects that didn’t work. To
start with, the toss factor is
something India have factored
in as right through the tourna-
ment teams batting second en-
joyed a good success rate. Only
thrice did teams win batting
first and two of those came
against Hong Kong. And then,
India continued to rotate their
players, still appearing to figure
which combination will suit
them at the World Cup. They
also missed two of their key
bowlers — Jasprit Bumrah and
Harshal Patel — who have long
been part of India’s plans at the
T20 World Cup.

IT was in 2019 when Alison
Riske shone through after a se-
ries of impressive wins on the
circuit. One of the highlights of
her year was beating then World
No 1 Ashleigh Barty in the third
round of Wimbledon before go-
ing down in three tight sets to
Serena Williams in the quarter-
finals. It also included a triumph
at ‘s-Hertogenbosch apart from
reaching the final at Wuhan, a
WTA 1000 event. Those run of
results propelled her to the WTA
Elite Trophy, an end-of-season
competition for players ranked
between 9 and 19. That in itself
was evidence of her improve-
ment. She began the year 48th,
she was 18th when the calendar
finished.
Her 2020 began promisingly, a
run to the quarterfinals at Bris-
bane before her best perform-
ance at Melbourne (4th round).
Just when it looked like that up-
ward trajectory was taking off,
the calendar came to a halt,
thanks to the pandemic. After
the tournaments returned, she
was down with a nasty foot in-
jury that cost her close to nine
months of playing time. The
wins dried up in the first part of
2021 (4-11 losing record) but a
steady late-season charge cul-
minated in a third title (Aus-
tria). She needed that, more
than anything to convince her-
self that she was past her injury
