Some important results

Multinomial Theorem
BINOMIAL THEOREM
IMPORTANT TERMS

(a) General term: The general term or the (r + 1)th

term in the expansion of (x + y)n is given by
Tr + 1 = nCr xn - r . yr
IMPORTANT TERMS

(b) Middle term: The middle term (s) in the

expansion of (x + y)n is (are):
(i) If n is even, there is only one middle term
which is given by
T(n + 2)/2 = nCn/2 . xn/2 . yn/2
(ii) If n is odd, there are two middle terms which
are T(n + 1)/2 & T{(n + 1)/2} + 1
IMPORTANT TERMS

(c) Term independent of x: Term independent of

x contains no x; Hence find the value of r for
which the exponent of x is zero.
SOME RESULTS ON BINOMIAL
COEFFICIENTS

(a) nCx = nCy ⇒ x = y or x + y = n

(b) nCr - 1 + nCr = n + 1Cr
(c) rn Cr = n n-1Cr - 1
BINOMIAL THEOREM FOR NEGATIVE OR
FRACTIONAL INDICES
If n ∈ R, then

Provided | x | < 1.
Note:
(i) (1 - x)-1 = 1 + x + x2 + x3 + ………. ∞
(ii) (1 + x)-1 = 1 - x + x2 - x3 + ………. ∞
(iii) (1 - x)-2 = 1 + 2x + 3x2 + 4x3 + ………. ∞
(iv) (1 + x)-2 = 1 - 2x + 3x2 - 4x3 + ………. ∞
PROPERTIES OF BINOMIAL
COEFFICIENT
nC
0,
nC
1,
……., nCr, ……… nCn are usually denoted
by C0, C1, ……., Cr, Cn respectively.

(i) C0 + C1 + C2 + ……… + Cn = 2n

(ii) C0 - C1 + C2 - ……… + (-1) nCn = 0

(iii) C0 + C2 + C4 + ……… = C1 + C3 + C5 + …..

= 2n - 1
SOME IMPORTANT RESULTS

(i) (1 + x)n = C0 + C1x + C2x2 + …… +Cnxn,

Putting x = 1 and -1, we get

C0 + C1 + C2 + ……. + Cn = 2n and

C0 - C1 + C2 - C3 + ……. (-1)n Cn = 0
SOME IMPORTANT RESULTS

(ii) Differentiating

(1 + x)n = C0 + C1x + C2x2 + ……. + Cnxn,

on both sides we have, n(1 + x)n - 1

= C1 + 2C2x + 3C3x2 + ….. + nCnxn-1 ……(i)

x=1

⇒n2n-1 = C1 + 2C2 + 3C3 + …….nCn

x = -1

⇒ 0 = C1 - 2C2 + …….. + (-1)n - 1 nCn.

Differentiating (i) again and again we will have

different results.
SOME IMPORTANT RESULTS

(iii) Integrating (1 + x)n, we have,
