The Musical Staff

The staff, (or ‘stave’,as they call it in Britain), is a set of lines and spaces that
runs horizontally across a page of music.

What is a grand staff?

The grand staff is simply the combination of treble and bass clef, joined together
with a bracket. In general, the music notated in the treble clef is performed with
the right hand and the music notated in the bass clef is performed with the left
hand. The grand staff looks like this:

The G Clef is also referred to as the treble clef. The

treble clef tells us where the note G is on the staff.

The F Clef is also referred to as the bass clef. The bass

clef tells us where the note F is on the staff.
The lines of grand staff: invisible line
The grand staff allows us to understand the mystery of middle C. Middle C is on
an invisible line in the middle of the grand staff.

This is why middle C is called so. Middle C is not called middle C because it is in
the middle of the piano. It is called middle C because it is in the middle of the
grand staff!

Middle C is notated here in treble clef:

And middle C is notated here in the bass clef:

Bar Lines
The two staves of a grand staff are connected by a vertical bar line on the left
side and in between. All the bar lines in the music run straight through both
staves, connecting them into one giant staff.

Brace
The two staves are also joined by a brace all the way on the left side. The brace
connects the two staves and helps us remember that both staves are meant to
be played by the same instrument.

Measure or Bar
A measure (or bar) is a group of note, that has a length specified by the time
signature. Measures exist to organize long pieces of music into smaller units

Pitch
Pitch in music simply means how high or low something sounds. The higher the
line or space is on the staff, the higher the note it represents. The lower the line
or space, the lower the note it represents.
Musical Note
In music, a note is the representation of a musical sound. Notes can represent
the pitch and duration of a sound in musical notation.
