AP SUMMER WORK 2019

As of now, AP French is scheduled for the full year, every other day. Take a few weeks off as a
vacation from school and French, and then get into a routine! During the summer you must
focus on your French skills. What you don’t actively use, you will lose! (Talk to yourself every
day in French, think in French!). To complete these assignments during the last days of the
summer or just before class begins will defeat the purpose! The objectives of the summer
assignments are:
· To become familiar with the AP French exam format
· To practice your French skills during the summer so that you will
not slip in proficiency
· To expand your vocabulary via authentic readings and thematic
vocabulary
·To become comfortable with regular speaking and listening

It is expected that you complete this summer assignment in preparation for AP French. Please
understand that you will be held accountable for this work (counted as your first 100 point
test grade) and not completing it will jeopardize your grade in the  class.

Merci!

***I will create + share a Googledoc with this file and it’s links so that you
can access them more easily. All sites are also on the Palisades homepage
under PHS/For Students and Parents / Advanced Placement Program /AP
French site/ for easier access to links! See AP summer work link.

***You will create a folder in Googledocs immediately and title it “LastName

AP French summer work” (ie Neiman AP French Summer Work). All Googledocs that you
create for your assignments will be part of this folder. I will check your
work regularly so work on it throughout the summer and not during the last
days!
AP SUMMER WORK 2019
ALL SUMMER LONG (from JULY 1st on)

1) Journal Keeping for Writing and Vocabulary Growth

You will keep a physical journal (or in a Google doc shared with me called “LastName
journal”) over the summer with a minimum of 1 entry of at least one paragraph in length a
week from July through August. The topic can be anything of your choosing. For example, you
can write about your opinions on a certain topic, reactions to news events, describe your day, or
just write a mini-story. Try to vary your tenses. It is expected that you use a dictionary and
look up new words to use each time to broaden your vocabulary base (VERY important!!) I will
not grade this journal for correctness – only check that you have made a strong effort and have
completed it- it’s for your personal growth and thoughts. (minimum 8 entries total)

2) Listening and Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary Growth

Spend 15 minutes per weekday viewing videos and completing listening activities at various sites: (vary your sources!!)
http://www.tv5.org/cms/chaine-francophone/enseigner-apprendre-francais/Premiere-classe/p-2040-lg0-Apprendre-le-
francais-en-ligne-avec-Premiere-classe.htm
(choose from the top THEMES choice list of environment, science, etc)
http://www.rfi.fr/lffr/pages/001/accueil_exercice_ecoute.asp (choose by THEME on left)
http://www.1jour1actu.com/infos-animees/ (watch different news articles explained to kids)
and for reading go to:
http://www.parismatch.com/ (choose by THEME on top bar)
http://www.leparisien.fr/ (choose THEME of news on top choice bar- then click on an article topic to read the entire
article)
https://newsinfrench.org/daily?utm_source=home1 subscribe to this French news daily site – great and easy
for vocab growth!

From these listening and reading resources, write down the names of the videos
you view and/or articles you read and 5 words in French and English that you
learned per session. You should have a list of at least 25 words per week, .That
is, a minimum of 5 fifteen minute sessions. Create a Googledoc and title it
“LastName Listening/Reading”. Place each week's vocab on a page with a heading
of the title and the date completed and the link for the listening/article. By
the time school begins, you should have at least 6 lists of 25 voabulary words =
150 new words!!.
Vary your viewing and reading to include the following themes that appear on the
AP French exam:

1. Science and Technology- la science et la technologie

2. Contemporary Life- la vie contemporaine
3. Family and Community- la famille et la communauté
4. Beauty and Aesthetics- l’esthétique
5. Global Challenges- les défis mondiaux
6. Personal and Public Identities- la quête de soi

3)Reading Comprehension Activities

Read the 5 short texts in the Reading Comprehension Packet in your folder and complete
the following:
1) Read and understand the multiple choice questions
2) Look up necessary words and record new vocabulary on the reading margins (for
the text and the questions!)
3) Answer the multiple choice questions
4) Mark in the text where you found the answer to each question (write the
number of the question in the area where you found the answer!)

Completing all of these steps will assure you full credit on this section of the summer
assignment!

4)Email (due by July 8th)

Send me a formal email (include Chère Mme Neiman, a closing greeting from you, formal voice)
(via attachment, (en français, bien sûr) that reports what you have done so far this summer
(past tense with passé composé and imparfait) and what you will do (future/ conditional) for
the rest of the summer. (50 word min) Use the email vocabulary in your useful vocabulary
section and make it formal voice (vous) when addressing me! Don’t use a translator – bad habits
will develop for AP and you will get a 0!
