INTRODUCTION

o Allah’s nurturing is always full of compassion. On the Night of Decree, Allah

(‫ )سبحانه وتعالى‬will pardon and decree everything for the whole year, what is

the best dua to make?

BEST SUPPLICATION ON THE NIGHT OF DECREE

‫ اللهم إنك عفو تحب‬:‫ "قولي‬:‫ يا رسول هللا أرأيت إن علمت أي ليلة القدر ما أقول فيها؟ قال‬:‫قلت‬

"‫العفو فاعف عني‬

I asked: "O Messenger of Allah (‫ !)صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬If I realize Lailat-ul-Qadr

(Night of Decree), what should I supplicate in it?" He replied, "You should

supplicate: Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun, tuhibbul-'afwa, fa'fu 'anni (O Allah,
You are All-Pardoning, and love to pardon; so pardon me)."1

1 Riyadh As Saliheen, At Tirmidhi, Book 9, Hadith 1195

M Y P A R A D I S E I S I N M Y H E A R T

o We need to be pardoned and forgiven so that the most beautiful decrees

may be decreed for us.
o The best thing a person can be given after yaqeen “certainty” is pardoning
and well-being.

PARDONING AND WELL-BEING ARE BEST AFTER

CERTAINTY

“Abu Bakr stood upon the Minbar, then wept, and said: ‘The Messenger of
Allah (‫)صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬stood upon the Minbar the first year (of Hijrah), then

wept, and said: “Ask Allah for pardon and Al-`Āfiyah, for verily, none has
been given anything better than Al-`Āfiyah.”2

A L ‘ A F U W – ( ‫)العفو‬
THE ALL-PARDONING

WHO IS AL ‘AFUW?

MEANING IN THE LANGUAGE

o The word (‫ )عفو‬means:

1. To cross-over, overlook and not punish a sin.

2. To erase something and remove its impact and traces.
3. Abundance
4. To easily attain
5. Ease and giving

MEANING IN THE RELIGION

1. ALLAH IS AL ‘AFUW

o Allah (‫ )سبحانه وتعالى‬pardons and overlooks the mistakes of the people. And

when He pardons, He removes the traces of that sin completely so that it is

not talked about, even on the Day of Judgement, subhan Allah.
o He removes all traces of the sins from the people’s hearts, minds and book
of records, and He will replace that sin with good deeds.
o Someone might ask, “what is the difference between pardoning and
forgiveness?”. Sins needs forgiveness while pardoning is when we are not
doing our good deeds in the best way. Pardoning is to make our standard
and quality of good deeds higher.
M Y P A R A D I S E I S I N M Y H E A R T

o Allah Al ‘Afuw gives abundant favors. And on the Night of Decree, we want
our sins to be pardoned and to be decreed abundant favors. May Allah
(‫ )سبحانه وتعالى‬pardon us. Ameen.

o Allah Al ‘Afuw wants ease for us. When the Prophet (‫ )صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬is

faced with two options, he would always choose the easier one.
o Allah Al ‘Afuw can easily be approached; it is not difficult to reach Allah

(‫ )سبحانه وتعالى‬unlike people who are difficult to reach. There is no barrier to

reach Him; there are no mediators. Those who are committing shirk are
making it difficult on themselves by placing mediators. When we need
anything, we just go to Al ‘Afuw and He will easily give us.
o People commit sins yet He is still dealing with them as if they did not commit
that sin, they are not obedient, yet He is dealing with them as if they are
obedient.
o If Allah (‫ )سبحانه وتعالى‬took us to account for every sin, then no moving

creation would remain on this earth.

SURAH AN NAHL 61

And if Allah were to seize mankind for their wrong-doing, He would not leave
on it (the earth) a single moving (living) creature, but He postpones them for
an appointed term and when their term comes, neither can they delay nor
can they advance it an hour (or a moment).

o He is the one introducing the rewards even if there is a sin.

TYPES OF PARDONING

1. GENERAL PARDONING

o Allah (‫ )سبحانه وتعالى‬pardons all the sinners and criminals, how? Not by

forgiving them, but by averting the punishment because of their sins. He

could easily cut-off all supplies and blessings from them, but out of His
pardoning, He does not cut if off for them. Despite insulting and disbelieving
in Allah (‫)سبحانه وتعالى‬, He still makes them laugh, enjoy and opens the duniya

for them.

2. SPECIAL PARDONING

o This pardoning is for those who come to Allah (‫ )سبحانه وتعالى‬with repentance,

who ask for forgiveness, and ask from Him.

o When the person faces any kind of affliction whether in his health, wealth
or children, then it is a means for expiation of sins. Though we do not want
forgiveness through affliction, but we always want well-being and to be
pardoned. For this reason we ask Allah for pardoning and well-being in the
supplication.
o Allah (‫ )سبحانه وتعالى‬will guide the believers to the easiest and shortest path.

He will teach us an easy life with shortcuts. He will guide us to the best deeds
and utterances, even to worship in an easy way. Once the Prophet ( ‫صلى‬

‫ )هللا عليه وسلم‬saw his wife saying dhikr for hours, so he told her to say the

following supplication and she will get the same reward.

WORSHIP WITH EASE

Juwairiyah bint Al-Harith (May Allah be pleased with her), the Mother of the
Believers, reported: The Prophet (‫)صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬came out from my

apartment in the morning as I was busy in performing the dawn prayer. He

came back in the forenoon and found me sitting there. The Prophet ( ‫صلى هللا‬

‫)عليه وسلم‬said, "Are you still in the same position as I left you." I replied in the

affirmative. Thereupon the Prophet said, "I recited four words three times
after I had left you. If these are to be weighed against all you have recited
since morning, these will be heavier. These are: Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi,
`adada khalqihi, wa rida nafsihi, wa zinatah `arshihi, wa midada kalimatihi
[Allah is free from imperfection and I begin with His praise, as many times as
the number of His creatures, in accordance with His Good Pleasure, equal to
the weight of His Throne and equal to the ink that may be used in recording
the words (for His Praise)]." 3

ALLAH’S PARDONING JOINED WITH OTHER

NAMES OF ALLAH

o The name of Allah Al ‘Afuw is connected with Allah Al Ghafoor. Al Ghafoor

forgives our sins and Al ‘Afuw overlooks the shortcomings in our worship. Our
gratitude, tawwakul and prayer is not up to standard.
o The name of Allah Al ‘Afuw is connected with Allah Al Qadeer. The best
pardoning is when there is complete ability. He is able to do all things, yet
He still overlooks and pardons. He removes our sins from the book of records
and from the mind of the angels, subhan Allah. When Allah (‫)سبحانه وتعالى‬

pardons, it is not out of weakness, but out of his ability.

IMPACTS OF BELIEVING IN ALLAH AL

‘AFUW

o We should love to pardon because Allah (‫ )سبحانه وتعالى‬loves to pardon. We

need to have certainty that Allah (‫ )سبحانه وتعالى‬will pardon us.

o We should supplicate to Allah (‫ )سبحانه وتعالى‬asking for pardoning and well-

being in the morning and evening supplications.

"The Messenger of Allah (‫ )صلى هللا عليه وسلم‬never abandoned these

supplications, every morning and evening: Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa

wal-'afiyah fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyah
fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahum-mastur 'awrati, wa amin raw'ati
wahfazni min bayni yadayya, wa min khalfi, wa 'an yamini wa 'an shimali, wa

forgiveness and well-being in this world and in the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask
You for forgiveness and well-being in my religious and my worldly affairs. O
Allah, conceal my faults, calm my fears, and protect me from before me
and behind me, from my right and my left, and from above me, and I seek
refuge in You from being taken unaware from beneath me)."4

o We should pardon those who are under our authority such as our children,
helpers and so forth. We should pardon the helpers at least seventy times.
o The more we pardon, the more we will be elevated and honored. It is
important to always pardon each other and to renew this pardoning.

MAY ALLAH PARDON ALL OF US AND GRANT US THE WELL -BEING. AMEEN.
