4. Test results

Typical test results are shown on fig. 1, 2 and 3 for compound type 1, 2 and 3
correspondently.
Intensity maxima:

For type 1 – 7.5 KW/sr;

For type 2 – 8.5 KW/sr;
For type 3 – 7.5 KW/sr.

Burning time (from time to cross 0,1Imax in the beginning till time to cross 0,1Imax
at the end):

For type 1 – 8,3 sec;

For type 2– 10 sec;
For type 3– 8,0 sec.

Type 3 shows the most uniform burning law.

Type 1 burning law has strongly pronounced intensity maximum at the burn
beginning.
Type 2 burning law has low-grade intensity maximum at the burn beginning and
explicit intensity maximum at the end of burning.
All three types have long flame buildup time – 1.5÷2 с. The reason of that is
ignition way – on open area, not in case. Flame buildup expected time for incase
ignition is 0.2÷0.4 sec.

5. Summary

1. All three types of compound have approximately the same intensity – 7.5÷8.5
KW/sr and burning time – 8÷10 sec.
2. Type 3 compound shows the most uniform burning law. This compound should
be better for PIK-2P pellet.
3. Next ground test should be done with real flare.

PRELIMINARY TEST REPORT
for pyrotechnic compound of IR emission generator for PIK-2P flare

1. Unit under test

Different compounds intended to use in pellet of PIK-2P flare.

Three types of compound were tested.
The difference is in compounding ingredient percentage. 10 samples of each
compound were tested.

2. Test purpose

Test purpose is to define parameters of IR emission for each type of compound on

the open air condition.
Tested parameters are following:
- Intensity in a wavelength band ∆λ = 3÷6 μm;
- compound burning time;
- burning qualitative assessment.

3. Test conditions and instrumentation

Test was carried out on specialized test area under following conditions:

Date of test: Oct, 05, 2010;

Test time: Day, 10 a.m. ÷ 2 p.m.;
Temperature: 12ºС÷14ºС;
Atmospheric visibility: >8 km;
Humidity: <70%.

Instrumentation had included three IR radiometers with band of : 1.8÷3 μm;

2.8÷4.2 μm; 3÷6 μm. Results were registered by multichannel ADC and recorded to PC
hard disk under specialized software.
Igniters were used for pellet ignition.
Stand with pellet and instrumentation were located on a distance of 450 m.
