 Estimation of the effect of compressor pressure ratio on volumetric

efficiency.

2
The volumetric efficiency of a compressor is a function of:

I. The pressure ratio

II. The clearance volume ratio
III. The index of the expansion process
IV. The pressure drop due to resistances in the intake system
V. The temperature rise in the intake system
VI. The leakage through the valves and piston seals.

3
 Adjust the condenser water to maximum and switch on.
 Reduce the evaporator air flow rate until the evaporation temperature (t4) approaches 0°C. Allow conditions
to stabilize, then make the observations below.

R134a Mass flow rate m (g/sec)

Compressor suction pressure P1 (KNm-2)

Compressor suction T1 (°C)

temperature
Compressor delivery pressure P2 (KNm-2)

 Keeping (t4) the same, reduce the condenser water so that the condenser pressure (p2) rises, then repeat the
observations.
 Repeat reducing the condenser water until the pressure reaches 120 kN m-2.

Compressor pressure ratio

1st way:

Volume flow rate (at intake conditions) at compressor suction = m V1

m: R134a Mass flow rate
V1: Specific volume at state 1 (from p-h diagram)

6
Compressor swept volume:

SPECIFICATION
Compressor: Hermetically sealed. Swept volume 8.85 cm³ rev-1.
Rotational speed
approx.2800 rev.min-1 on 50Hz. (3400 rev.min-1 on 60Hz.) Fitted
with thermal overload protection.

2nd way: Considering the pressure ratio, clearance volume ratio, and the index of the expansion process

only, The volumetric efficiency is equal to:

 Compare the values of the volumetric efficiency obtained from the 1st and 2nd
ways.
 Plot the % volumetric efficiency (1st way) as a function of the compressor pressure
ratio
 Analyze and conclude
