CAUTION: Strut spring is under a high compressive load. Do not remove the
strut shaft to upper support nut without first relieving the upper
and lower spring supports of spring pressure, using the proper
spring compressing tool.

1. Mount J 45400 Strut Spring Compressor (or equivalent) in holding fixture.

2. Place strut/spring assembly into spring compressor. Fasten strut with a strut-to-knuckle bolt and nut
through the lower strut mounting hole.

IMPORTANT: It may be necessary to cut off a portion of the stud with a die grinder to
provide clearance to remove the stud due to interference with the
steering knuckle. With stud loose in hub, rotate hub to position where
least amount of interference between stud and knuckle exists.

1. UsingSA91107NE (or equivalent), remove wheel stud.

2. Start new wheel stud into hub.
3. Place four washers over stud.
4. Install wheel mounting nut with flat side toward washer.

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

FRONT SUSPENSION DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

Fig. 55: Exploded View Of Front Suspension Components

Courtesy of GENERAL MOTORS CORP.

A MacPherson strut type front suspension is used on all Saturn vehicles. The strut contains an internal
damper, much like a conventional shock absorber. Therefore, strut assemblies, consisting of a strut and a
coil spring, provide both spring and shock absorber functions. If the strut becomes damaged or worn, it must
be replaced as a unit since it is not serviceable.

The strut assembly is connected to the vehicle at three locations. The top of the strut is fastened to the
vehicle body by fasteners. The bottom of the strut is attached to the cradle through the steering knuckle and
lower control arm (providing side-to-side stability) and a front stabilizer shaft (providing front-to-rear
stability).

Although the front suspension components are lubricated for life and require no routine lubrication, they
should be inspected periodically for damage and wear.
