Mobile Communications- Chapter 4 Semester IX

Exercises

1. Consider a direct sequence CDMA system where 30 equal-power users share the data bandwidth.
Each user transmits data at 10 kbits/s using BPSK modulation. Determine the minimum chip rate
to obtain a signal to interference (Eb/N0) of 7 dB. Assume that the receiver noise is negligible
with respect to the interference from the other users.

2. Consider a direct sequence CDMA system with 15 users transmitting information bits at a rate of
12.2 kbps per user towards the base station (uplink). The chip rate is about 3.84 Mchips/s and the
required Eb/N0 to achieve sufficient performance is 6 dB. All users are received with equal power
of 1mW. The thermal noise power at the receiver is 5mW.
a. What is the processing gain?
b. Determine the Signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio SINR and the Eb/N0 at the receiver.
c. What is the minimum received power from a user such that the required Eb/N0 is satisfied?
d. What is the maximum number of users that can be received with sufficient performance?
e. How much should the processing gain be increased to allow for doubling the number of users?

3. Consider the uplink of a CDMA system with two synchronous users received as shown in the
figure below.

User 1 spreads its data signal d1 = {-1, +1} with the sequence C1 = [–1 –1 –1 +1 –1 +1 +1 +1].
User 2 spreads its data signal d2 = {-1, +1} with the sequence C2 = [+1 +1 –1 +1 +1 -1 -1 -1].
The received values for the chips of the first bit are y = [0 0 -2 2 0 0 0 0].
a. What is the spreading factor? What is the spreading gain in dB?
b. Are the sequences C1 and C2 orthogonal to each other?
c. Perform the despreading operation for the first bit of user 1. What is the estimated bit?
d. Perform the despreading operation for the first bit of user 2. What is the estimated bit?
