Term Project Statement

Dear Students

This projects requires that all geotechnical design aspects to be addressed and performed
according to the specifications provided in the excel sheet posted in the eLearning system.
Design models shall provide multiple engineering solutions, conceptual design, preliminary
designs, problem solving details, constrains, successful design options, and designs that fail due
to malfunction in on one or more of the design checks below.

Geotechnical design aspects are limited to:

1- Foundation Geometry: type, shape, size, dimensions, and the aspect ratio
2- Foundation depth
3- Centroidal location

The above mandates conducting the following set of analyses:

1- Developing soil profiles and parameters

2- First guess (geometry and dimensions)
3- Bearing pressure calculations
4- Bearing capacity calculations. Iterate no.1&2 until successful run is obtained, or try to
formulate a closed form solution
5- Considerations on bearing capacity
6- Settlement evaluations. Iterate, considering 1 to 4, if needed
7- Depth of exploration (check)
8- Physical overlap between the foundations (check)
9- Stress distributions overlaps. The sum of the stresses induced by two adjacent
foundations, at a point, shall not surpass the allowable bearing capacity
10- Failure mechanism overlaps(check)
11- Foundations stresses induced by elevated foundations of any (connect to 3 and 5)

As far as the project guidelines is a concern, please comply with the regulations provided In the
file titled “Project Regulations”.
