The movie, “BRIDGE of SPIES”, is the story of a lawyer and his foreign client.

The lawyer is an
American who is defending a Russian national who was arrested for the case of espionage in
America. The lawyer is known by the name "James B. Donovan" and the defendant is known by
the name "Rudolf Abel".
Abel is convicted, but Donovan convinces the judge to spare Abel the death penalty because Abel
had been serving his country honorably, and he might prove useful for a future prisoner exchange;
Abel is sentenced to 30 years. Donovan appeals the conviction to the Supreme Court based on the
lack of a search warrant for the seizure of Abel's ciphers and photography equipment. For his
principled stand Donovan and his family are harassed, including shots being fired at their home. The
conviction is upheld.

On the negative side of what the lawyer did, it seems that the judge and Donavan had a
conspiracy, because they talked about the case of Abel, in order to lower the sentence, but the
due process of law was not followed. The lawyer did not do well to speak to the judge for a case
whose judgment was over already. Mr. Donovan he violated the code of ethics of lawyers, he
should not have approached the judge, he should have gone through it legally, he influenced
the judge's verdict.

On the positive aspect, the lawyer also has good intentions, he has an appreciation for human
life and a broad mindset he is not afraid of any threat to his life and family just do his job and
bring out the truth even his life is in danger. He has a stand and enforces what is right even w
they are not of the same race of the accused. He saved the two life of people even they are
different in cultures and governments.

I suggested that lawyer should not talk to the judge to reduce the sentence, he would have just
filed a petition to have the sentence reduced, his dignity would still be high, but overall I am still
satisfied with what he did to fulfill his duty. I will give a quote to every one especially to my fellow
lawyer Student not in all time you will obey the law, we have heart, we feel mercy sometimes in
consideration for humanitarian reason we disobey the law but that is normal to all people, and
the court say "in every law there is always an exception".
