6-Network Standards and Cabling

Computer Networks

1
Network Standards

Ethernet is a computer network architecture consisting of

various specified local-area network protocols, devices, and
connection (physical plugs and sockets)

The token ring standard specifies that computers and devices

on the network share or pass a special signal (token)

TCP/IP is a network standard that defines how messages are

routed from one end of a network to another

2
Network Standards

• Ethernet
– Ethernet is popular because it strikes a good balance between
speed, cost and ease of installation
– The Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers developed
an Ethernet standard known as IEEE Standard 802.3
– Maximum bandwidth 10 Mbps
– Maximum distances 100 to 500 meters

3
Network Standards

• Fast Ethernet
– Newer version of Ethernet
– Bandwidth is 100 Mbps
– Uses Cat5
– Fast Ethernet provides faster speed for video, multimedia,
graphics, Internet surfing

4
Network Standards

• Gigabit Ethernet
– High bandwidth version of Ethernet
– 1 to 10 Gbps
– Cat 6
– Gigabit Ethernet was developed to meet the need for faster
communication in network applications
• Token ring
– Uses shielded twisted pair cabling
– Bandwidth between 10 and 25 Mbps

5
Network Standards

• Wireless 802.11
– Also called Wi-Fi
– IEEE standard
• Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers

6
Network Cabling
Making connections with Cat6
Types of Ethernet Cables
• Straight Through Cable
➢ Used to connect the devices belonging to different
groups.

• Cross-Over Cable
➢ Used to connect the devices belonging to same groups.
Families of Devices
• Group 1
1. PC
2. Router

• Group 2
1. Switch
2. Hub
Connectivity between different Devices
How to make Ethernet Cables ?

• It depends upon 8 wire combinations.

Standards for connectivity
Cross-Over & Straight Cable
RJ45 connector
Making connections - Tools
• Cat6 cable
• RJ45 connectors
• Cable stripper
• Scissors
• Crimping tool
Making connections - Steps
1. Strip cable end
2. Untwist wire ends
3. Arrange wires
4. Trim wires to size
5. Attach connector
6. Check
7. Crimp
8. Test
