CHE433 ASSIGNMENT 1 | SEMESTER 20224

QUESTION 1
(PO1, CO1, C2)

Using the basic principles and fundamentals of thermodynamics, explain the cases
given below :
a) An ideal gas goes through expansion process in which the volume is doubled.
Explain the difference between the work done by the system if the expansion is
done isothermally and if it is done in a process where the polytopic exponent, n, is
1.4.
b) A closed container contains liquid water at 125 kPa and 75oC. The specific volume
of the system is 0.001026 m3/kg. Explain the reasoning for approximating the
properties of compressed liquid to those at saturated liquid at a given temperature
instead of the given pressure.
c) Consider a closed system that contains water, undergoes constant temperature
cooling in which the quality has changed from 90% to 40%. Write the equation that
calculates the work done on the system. Support your answer with a sketch of the
process on a P-V diagram.
d) For a given volume, how would the pressure of a real gas compare to the one
calculated using ideal gas equation of state? Explain your answer.

QUESTION 2
(PO2, CO2, C4)

A system containing 5kg of water undergoes a series of processes:

Process 1 2: Isochoric Heating to saturated liquid and 5000 kPa

Process 2 3: Isobaric Expansion to saturated vapor
Process 3 4: Isochoric Cooling to 120oC
Process 4 1: Isothermal compression

a) Sketch the processes on a P-V diagram with respect to saturation lines.

b) Calculate the change in quality during the entire cooling process.

c) Determine the ratio:
𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶𝐶 𝑊𝑊𝑊𝑊𝑊𝑊𝑊𝑊

d) For process 2-3, show that the heat transfer involved in the process is equivalent
to enthalpy change between the states.

e) Determine the total heat transfer (in kJ) for the cycle. Briefly explain your answer.

f) If volumes of state 3 and 4 are to be doubled while maintaining the pressures,

how would other properties of state 3 and state 4 be affected? Determine the
new temperatures. (You may sketch the P-V diagram showing the new states 3
and 4 to support your answer)

g) Compare the new temperature of state 3 that you have determined above with
the one determined using ideal gas equation of state and Generalized Chart.
Comment the results of your calculations. (Submit the chart together with your
answer script).

QUESTION 3
(PO2, CO3, C5)

a) One kilogram of gas is contained in a piston cylinder device. The piston has a mass
of 30 kg and diameter of 30 cm. The electric motor draws 5 A from the 20 V battery.
Ninety percent of the energy is used to spin the paddle wheel. After 1 minute of
operation the 30-kg piston is raised 10 mm. Express the net amount of work in
involved during the process in terms of t, for 0<t<60 (minutes). (Hint: Minimum five
values of t)

Take Patm = 95 kPa and use Microsoft Excel to tabulate the result and to construct
the graph that shows the relationship between the net amount of work and duration
the motor is switched on.

b) Now, the piston is locked/pinned such that it can no longer move. The motor is
switched on for a time duration and as expected the temperature rise is observed.
If the initial and final temperatures are 27oC and 307oC, respectively, evaluate the
methods below by determining the internal energy change of the gas.

i) Assuming constant specific heat taken at 300K (Table A-2a)

ii) Using Specific heat values taken from Table A-2b
iii) Using Specific heat from Table A-2c
iv) Using Properties of Ideal gas Table

(*You may choose any type of gas listed on the table shown above)
c) If the initial temperature and duration are the same in the two cases, how would
you compare 307oC to the final temperature if the process occurs in a free-moving-
piston cylinder device? Explain.
