Common Diseases CRUX
Common Diseases CRUX
Gaurav Garg
Diabetes Mellitus
A group of diseases that result in too much sugar in the blood (high blood glucose).
● Type 1 diabetes: A chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin.
Inside pancreas, there are beta-cells which produce insulin. This is a chronic condition and an
auto-immune disease from childhood. Therefore the person has to take insulin from outside
through injections. Only 10% of people get affected from this.
● Type 2 diabetes: A chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar
(glucose). With type 2 diabetes, the body resists insulin. This is caused after a certain age to
people and not from childhood. In this either the insulin is produced less or the produced
insulin does not work i.e. resistance against insulin. 90% of people get affected by this type of
diabetes.
AIDS
● Caused by – HIV Virus
● HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)–a
virus that attacks the immune system.
HIV attacks a specific type of immune system cell
in the body. It's known as the CD4 helper cell or T cell
(a type of white blood cell). When HIV destroys this cell,
it becomes harder for the body to fight off other
infections.
● Fatigue, fever, sore throat, lymphadenopathy (swelling of
lymph), splenomegaly (increased size of spleen), rash,
diarrhea.
● Opportunistic infections (Pneumocystic carinii
pneumonia, Tb). Bacteria causing infections are present in
the body in latent form and attacks the body when the
person becomes ill or unhealthy like TB.
● There is no medicine to treat this. Although there are some
medicines to give temporary relief to people.
● Transmission
● the new born child acquires it from affected mother
● Unprotected sex with the affected person
● Using the same needle already used by the affected person.
Measles
● Initially symptoms of severe cold
with fever, conjunctivitis, swollen eyelids, photophobia,
malaise, cough, nasopharyngeal congestion
● Measles is a highly contagious illness (spread quickly
among people) caused by a virus that replicates in the
nose and throat of an infected child or adult. Then,
when someone with measles coughs, sneezes or talks,
infected droplets spray into the air, where
other people can inhale them.
Polio
● Poliomyelitis (polio) is a highly infectious viral disease that largely
affects children under 5 years of age.
● The virus is transmitted by person-to-person spread mainly through
the faecal-oral route or, less frequently, by a common vehicle (e.g.
contaminated water or food) and multiplies in the intestine, from
where it can invade the nervous system and cause paralysis. Salk
vaccine is used.
● Two types of polio vaccines:
1. OPV
2. Salk vaccine
Tetanus
● Tetanus is a serious illness contracted through exposure to the
spores of the bacterium, Clostridium tetani, which live in soil,
saliva, dust, and manure.
● The bacteria can enter the body through deep cuts, wounds or
burns (and releases two toxins namely tetanospasmin and
tetanolysin) affecting the nervous system. The infection leads to
painful muscle contractions, particularly of the jaw and neck
muscle, and is commonly known as “lockjaw”.
● Tetanospasmin is a neurotoxin leads to spasm (muscles
permanently contracted and no relaxation) in
the body and tetanolysin destroys RBCs.
● There are medicines to treat tetanus but once affected it becomes
very difficult to save the person. The Preventative measure is to
get the vaccines.
Pneumonia
● Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both
lungs.
● The air sacs may fill with fluid or pus (purulent material), causing
cough with phlegm or pus, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing. A
variety of organisms, including bacteria, viruses and fungi, can
cause pneumonia.
Rabies
● A Rabies is a deadly virus spread to people from the saliva of
infected animals. The rabies virus is usually transmitted through a
bite of animals such as Dog, bat, jackal etc
● Once clinical symptoms appear, rabies is virtually 100% fatal.
● Brain becomes inflamed, hydrophobia is common.
Common Cold
● It is caused by Rhinovirus. Rhino means nose.
● The common cold is a viral infection of your nose and throat (upper
respiratory tract).
Diphtheria
● It is caused by bacteria Corynebacterium diphtheriae.
● It is a serious bacterial infection that usually affects the mucous
membranes of your nose and throat.
Cholera
● It is caused by bacteria Vibrio cholera (comma shaped
bacteria).
● It is an infectious disease that causes severe watery diarrhea,
which can lead to dehydration and even death if untreated. It
is caused by eating food or drinking water contaminated with
a bacterium called Vibrio cholerae.
Anaemia
● It is a condition in which the number of red blood cells or the haemoglobin concentration
within them is lower than normal.
● Haemoglobin is needed to carry oxygen and if you have too few or abnormal red blood cells,
or not enough haemoglobin, there will be a decreased capacity of the blood to carry oxygen to
the body’s tissues. This results in symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, dizziness and
shortness of breath, among others.
Types
1. Aplastic Anemia: Bone marrow is not working and thus not producing RBCs and
haemoglobin.
2. Vitamin deficiency anemia
3. Iron deficiency anemia
4. Sickle cell anemia: Shape of RBCs becomes sickle. It is a
genetic disease.
Fungal diseases
● It is commonly called athlete’s foot (Tinea pedis)
● The most common causative fungus is Trichophyton.
● Histoplasmosis caused through fungus.
Candidiasis
● It is a fungal infection caused by a yeast (a type
of fungus) called Candida. Some species of
Candida can cause infection in people; the most
common is Candida albicans.
● Candida normally lives on the skin and inside
the body, in places such as the mouth, throat,
gut, and vagina, without causing any problems.
Helminths
● Filariasis is a parasitic disease caused
by an infection with roundworms
● Taeniasis in humans is a parasitic
infection caused by the tapeworm
species Taenia saginata (beef
tapeworm), Taenia solium (pork
tapeworm). The worm scratches the
walls of intestine leading hematemesis
i.e. vomiting of blood, or blood in stool,
loss of RBCs.
● Hookworm infection is an infection of
the intestines that can cause an itchy
rash,
respiratory and gastrointestinal problems,
and eventually iron deficiency anemia due to ongoing loss of blood.
Trichomoniasis
● Also known as “trich” this is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the parasite
Trichomonas vaginalis. It affects the female urogenital tract.
Trypanosomiasis (Sleeping sickness)
● African trypanosomiasis is a parasitic disease transmitted by the tsetse fly that transmits a
parasite of the Trypanosoma family. It affects the central nervous system, blood, and lymph. It
leads to changes in sleep behavior, among other symptoms, and it is considered fatal without
treatment.
Animal diseases
Avian influenza
● Bird Flu, caused by influenza virus.
● H5N1 was the first avian influenza virus to infect humans.
● Generally it spreads among birds and the preventive measure adopted is culling of birds.
Foot and mouth disease
Brucellosis
● It is a bacterial infection (Brucella abortus) that spreads from animals to people. Most
commonly, people are infected by eating raw or unpasteurized (boiling at high temperature
then quickly cooling it) dairy products.
Rinderpest
● Also known as cattle plague, is a contagious viral disease affecting cloven- hoofed animals
mainly cattle and buffalo. Rinderpest is caused by a virus of the family Paramyxoviridae
Swine flu
● Also known as the H1N1 virus, is a relatively new strain of an influenza virus that causes
symptoms similar to the regular flu. It originated in pigs but is spread primarily from person
to person.
